Stop Worrying so Much

August 15, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Worry is interest on a debt not yet owed.

Is it worth being upset?

We get confused. We think if we can just worry “hard enough,” we can make things go better.

Logically, that doesn’t make sense. But this isn’t about logic. It’s about emotion.

If something is worrying you, follow this simple plan:

1) Ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” If the answer is minimal, refocus your thoughts on something else.
2) If it’s severe, ask yourself, “Can I do anything about this?”
3) If the answer is “no,” it’s time to get support and let go. If the answer is “yes,” it’s time to do something.

No path leads to more worrying.

Worrying depletes your ability to solve the tough problems, and ruins your mood the remainder of the time.

August 11, 2011 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Forgetting life for work?

Not able to maintain a social life and work life balance? Well, the answer to these questions would be YES! No one intends to forget their personal life, but in today’s competitive world the nature of the work is so hard-hitting that you can never remain disconnected from it. You are expected to do more than you actually can in one day. The pressure of your work comes along with you when you reach home. This pressure creates stress which can be harmful for you and as well as your personal life.

Maintaining a balance between work and pleasure is necessary.

For a healthy life, your work and leisure activities should travel together. Sometimes work will take the front seat and sometimes leisure. Only work or only leisure will lead to an unhealthy lifestyle affecting your body, mind and your surroundings.

Read below to find out ways in which you can create or at least try to create a work-life balance

Stress creates a huge impact on your mind and body.

Reduce stress. Take care of your heart. Be healthy.Stress might have a slow or a sudden effect on your heart. It might lead to heart diseases and even a life-threatening heart attack. Stress is an unavoidable part of our life; it is not possible to get rid of stress. All you can do is avoid it or find ways to deal with it. You need to take care of yourself first to take care of others. Pay attention to the needs of your body and mind in order to take care of yourself. Follow a few rules of life to deal with stress and see the difference in your health.

Symptoms of stress

Symptoms of stress are sleeplessness, aches and pain, losing and gaining weight, etc. Recognizing the symptoms and working on them is very important to live a healthy life.

Management

Give yourself enough time: Very often we forget ourselves. Remember yourself first, if you want a happy and healthy heart. Be good to yourself and give yourself enough time.

Have food that is healthy for your heart: Avoid food that is full of trans-fats such as a lot of fried food, fast food, cakes, etc. Restrict yourself from taking in a lot or refined sugar. Use food that helps to reduce cholesterol like extra virgin olive oil and garlic with your daily food. Use fish oil as it is very good for your heart and is a source of omega 3 fatty acid.

Have a balanced diet: Your food needs to include everything from minerals to vitamins, proteins, iron, carbohydrate and even fats in a proper proportion. Make sure the food that you consume contains everything your body needs. Make sure you have a balanced diet. [Read more…]

Accepting Compliments Helps Avoid Bad Habits

July 18, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

A compliment denied is punishment self-inflicted.”

We are very quick to beat ourselves up – and incredibly slow to congratulate ourselves. We also tend to dismiss it when others do, by showing off our “big but.” You know…

A friend says, “Wow! You look like you’ve lost a whole lot of weight! You look great!”

We reply, “Yeah, but, I’ve got so far to go.”

Or, someone says, “You are a great mom! I can’t believe how well you take care of your children.”

And again, “Yeah, but, you should have seen me last week. I was like a banshee.”

There is a tremendous difference between being proud of what we do and being conceited. Each time we deny a compliment — or beat ourselves up over a mistake – we avoid the opportunity to feel good. That engages our habit (whether that be eating, drinking, smoking, stress…) and we end up feeling worse, furthering the drive to engage in the habit.

Remember, if guilt & shame were motivational, we’d all be happier, healthier, and more successful.

Enjoy a compliment this week – and pass one on.

How to Correctly Use the Food Pyramid’s Replacement When Stressed

June 7, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

As you might know, Michelle Obama, greatly concerned with childhood obesity (and rightly so), has recently revised the food pyramid. Personally, I thought the original food pyramid was pretty easy to understand, but a few years ago, they decided to update it.

The older version looked like this:

I thought that made a lot of sense and was pretty simple to follow. However, I don’t make the rules, I just play with them. So, The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) changed the food pyramid in spring 2005 because they wanted to convey a better example of how to eat healthier. The “new and improved” (?) pyramid was based on the best available scientific facts concerning links between diet and good health and addressed flaws in the original food pyramid. The intent was laudable. The results? You decide:

In my humble opinion, it’s a mess. But, maybe that’s just me.

So fast forward to last week when Mrs. Obama decides to change it to make it easier for children (and those of us who are wrinkled children) to understand. The whole “pyramid” concept is dropped in favor of a plate, which makes sense.

Here’s the latest:

Actually, I think it’s simple and easy to understand. It also looks quite contemporary.

There’s just one problem.

It doesn’t address real life. I mean, after a stress-filled, running-all-over town kind of day, are you really going to come home to an exciting meal where the main components are Kale and Bulgar? I don’t think so.  So, with that in mind, I proudly announce the “choose my plate” model for stressful days. [Read more…]
