Finding Positive Intent

June 27, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There is positive intention behind every behavior.

Everything we do is driven by the desire to make our lives easier, better, or in some way enhanced. Most of the time, it’s a small thing. Periodically, it’s a large thing.

Even when you do something this is NOT helpful, the underlying goal was to make your life better. For example, if you eat too much, your goal is to find some joy, deal with stress, or feel comforted (as examples). However, the way you’re accomplishing those objectives is counterproductive long-term to what you want in the short term. [Read more…]

Overcoming Over-commitment

June 1, 2011 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Between all the “domains” in our lives – jobs, social activities, family and volunteer work, we’re often left with no time for ourselves. We’ve said “yes” to everything and then discover that there are not enough hours in the day, days in the week or weeks in the year to accomplish all we’ve said, thought and believed we could do. A human trait is the desire to please. We want to be kind, helpful and liked. That’s all wonderful, but what about when you can’t say no?

Over-commitment is not only frustrating; it also takes a toll on your health. There are many studies regarding the effort-reward-imbalance (ERI). One in particular involving the effort-reward-imbalance (ERI) and over commitment (OC), noted in The Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology said,

“Results suggested that all components of the ERI model – effort-reward-ratio, effort, reward and over-commitment – are associated with health-related quality of life, vital exhaustion, depression and quality of sleep.”

Considering that over-commitment actually harms our health, it’s time to decide what to do about it.

Here are some pointers: [Read more…]

Three Weeks: What do you do When Motivation Fades?

February 20, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

They say, “Eat less and exercise more; the weight will practically fall off.” They also say, “getting started is the hardest part.” Of course, garrulous as They are, They make sure to point out you shouldn’t have waited so long before taking care of yourself. Whoever “They” are, They sure have a lot to say about how to run your life, don’t They?

They also tell you that if you keep a new habit in place for only three weeks, it will be adapted into your life. I’m not sure I agree. I’ve been dieting since before they invited sugar-free cola and non-fat yogurt — considerably more than three weeks — and I still find healthy eating a challenge, especially when stressed with organizing my taxes, calling the plumber to fix a plugged toilet, and trying to find a few seconds for my family. In those moments, a double-bacon, cheesy, chiliburger and gargantuan order of fries still shout pretty loud.

Yet, if you have ever tried to adjust habits, you have faced the dreaded (insert ominous music here…) “Three Week Barrier.”

The Valentine’s Day Meal: A Heart Healthy Alternative

February 8, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

heart healthy meal for valentines dayBe forewarned; the following appears to be two divergent thoughts with seemingly nothing in common with the title of this column. However, plug on; all shall coalesce by the conclusion.

Thought one: The Internet is like an office – on a really, really, really huge scale; it is filled with marvelous facts that can be extremely important (or completely useless). The predicament is finding them – and determining into which category they fit.

Thought two: Writers, such as myself, are periodically (but thankfully not often) faced with the curse of “writer’s block,” a dreaded affliction which attacks creative sorts. Its symptoms include, but are not limited to: stress, inability to focus, lack of inspired thought, and a blank stare (usually at an empty page). I’ve experienced it a few times that made me feel as though I need to learn how to write a book again, but it never usually lasts such long periods. As deadline approaches – a rising sense of panic also wells up within one’s chest. Writer’s block also has a major side effect: the desire to consume uncontrollable amounts of sugary, snack-like substances.

Since such eating leads to guilt (and a protruding stomach), I have developed alternative, less-caloric methods to set free my Muse: an out of the ordinary technique involving internet search engines. (See, the topic is beginning to gel; aren’t you glad you stuck with me?) Instead of searching for subject matters, rather I pose questions.

For instance, it seemed apropos that this week, my message would involve a nod toward Valentine’s Day. Yet, my brain was a brick, solid, heavy, unmoving; nothing entered. So, I asked of the all-wise Google, “What healthy meal could I prepare on Valentine’s Day?” Forever obligingly (as I’m sure would be Yahoo), it provided me with 394,000 options in 0.13 seconds. Assuming three meals a day, and no duplication of recipes, it would take 359.81 years to try every meal listed. As much as I would love to be celebrating with my sweetheart in the year 2367, I find it unlikely; therefore I chose the first selection: Heart Healthy Dinner for Romance.
