5 Things You Can Do to be Happier & More Successful Starting NOW

January 20, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Improving oneself is not difficult. It might be uncomfortable. It might be slow; but difficult? Not so much. Figure out what you want to change; figure out a way to do it, move in that direction, correct as necessary.

So why don’t most people change?

Our problem is we make it too complicated. Some of the reasons we do that include:

  • We think simplicity means lack of drive
  • We are setting ourselves up for failure to get people to leave us alone (read related post)
  • We think it will get us there faster

In reality, the simpler we make it, the more likely we will achieve it. We have built our lives over years with patterns and habits to fill our days. It’s as if we have built a brick fortress around us. If we try and make too many changes, we have to knock out huge sections of the fortress; we won’t do that. If we can just rearrange a few bricks, we’re more likely to fit that in (read related post here).

So, with that in mind, I offer a very simple Five-Step Plan to make change now.

This Year’s Lucky Number

January 5, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Numbers loom large in our lives.

We commemorate birthdays and anniversaries in numbers of years. We monitor wealth in number of dollars. We even categorize our state of being via numbers: IQ, BMI, HDL.

Certain numbers are more popular than others. Take the number “3.” We’re conditioned to “think in 3s,” which explains why we use expressions like “Top three reasons…” or “Three examples…” Angry parents rely on “3.” My father, when upset, never said, “I’m going to count to four;” I’m guessing yours didn’t either.

One is a “power number” too, so when I woke up New Year’s day and noted the date, 1.1.11, I thought, “How cool!” Only nine times per century is every numeral in a date identical. My first “matched set” was 5.5.55 – but I was too young to fully appreciate it. Should I get a second chance in these next 100 years, I assure you there will be extreme gratitude.

However, 1.1.11 caused me to ponder, “Is there special significance from four “1”s? Might there be a cosmic sign in the only year that truly begins at the beginning? I’m not superstitious; but what about lucky numbers? What could “1.1.11” be trying to communicate?

Today’s Lucky Number

January 1, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It’s the start of a brand new year! It’s the perfect time to recommit yourself to moving forward. Of course, ANY day is the perfect day to do that; we just put some sort of arbitrary significance on January 1. Nonetheless, I’ll take what I can get. What is way cool is the date:

1/1/11

It’s rare that every number will be the same. (Personally, I’ve lived through 5/5/55 – but I didn’t remember it – 6/6/66, 7/7/77, 8/8/88, 9/9/99 and will hopefully experience 2/2/22 and 3/3/33 as well as 4/4/44.)

Alas, I digress.

So, what can we take away from four one’s?

First of all, in binary (after all, don’t we all first think in binary?), the number is 15. So, I decided that today’s lucky number must be 15. Anything with 15 in it today will be great! Of course, I could not think of many things that might have 15, so I took a clue from numerology. I admit I know nothing about numerology – except one keeps adding numbers together (or maybe they don’t). Either way, that’s what I did. I added 1+5 and of course the number is “6.”

Here Come the Fitness Ads!

December 29, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

As much as I appreciate the the Holidays, one has to admit it possess a downside: the relentless, unceasing, non-stop drone of promotions, commercials, and ads; loosely wrapped in pseudo-emotion by manipulative agencies pretending to appear as caring; with a primary objective being no more than inflating their coffers at our expense.

I do not consider all shopkeepers as greedy and soulless. Most are you and I, working their day-to-day, attempting to keep their heads above water. I also take no issue with profitability; we each must pay our bills. I am self-employed and therefore extremely aware of what it’s like to stare at the ceiling all night concerned how to pay my vendors, keep the government satisfied; and still claim some folding money for my family.

But can we be honest? After 132 renditions of the “Night Before Christmas” re-written into unusual off-tone radio commercials, can we unite hand-in-hand and admit that it wears down the psyche?

Deepak Chopra, lecturer and author, stated in December, “We are spending money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t like.”

Ouch. That kind of hurts; but “why?”
