Choose Your Word for the Year

January 4, 2016 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

We think in words.

Our thoughts determine our actions, which guide our actions.

Therefore, the words we choose determine our lives.

At the beginning of each year, my wife and I sit down at a local coffee shop and we make plans for what we’d like the year to look like.  At that meeting, we:

  • Set our goals for the year
  • Determine our priorities
  • Set our intentions
  • Picture what we’d do “if money were no object” (I can assure you I’d be writing this from a tropical climate if that came to be)
  • Determine what we are releasing that served us well in the past but no longer fits (including grudges, resentments, habits, and material clutter)

What might be the most important item on our agenda is choosing a word for the year. Call it a theme if you wish.

In 2014, we chose “Prosperity.” In 2015, we picked “Abundance.”

This year we opted for “Gratitude,” a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.

Is Your Financial Resolution Already Off-Track? Refocus on Your Financial Goals

January 31, 2014 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

So you made a New Year’s resolution involving finances, and it’s already fallen to the wayside.

expired-resolutionsWe get it. Maybe you resolved to reduce your credit card debt, save for a home or build an emergency fund, or even something as simple as create and stick to a budget. You must live and breathe that commitment each and every day if you are to achieve it, but relax—it’s not that hard. Below are some helpful hints to help you keep your 2014 financial resolution:

Take Pen to Paper

Write down your goal. Insure that it meets the following criteria:

  • The goal must be specific. What action will you take? “I will deposit $200 from each paycheck into my retirement account” as opposed to “I will save more this year.”
  • Make sure it’s measurable. You must be able to measure whether or not you are on track.
  • The goal must be achievable. Do your homework and ascertain if your goal is financially achievable.
  • Make it realistic. If your job requires you to drive all over town to meet with clients, you don’t have any control over whether you can spend less on gas, so don’t make that your goal.
  • It should be timely. Your goal must be stated in a way that holds you accountable to a time table. For example, “I will deposit $50 a month” as opposed to “I will save more.”

Now that you’ve set your goal, stay on track.

Today’s Lucky Number

January 1, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It’s the start of a brand new year! It’s the perfect time to recommit yourself to moving forward. Of course, ANY day is the perfect day to do that; we just put some sort of arbitrary significance on January 1. Nonetheless, I’ll take what I can get. What is way cool is the date:

1/1/11

It’s rare that every number will be the same. (Personally, I’ve lived through 5/5/55 – but I didn’t remember it – 6/6/66, 7/7/77, 8/8/88, 9/9/99 and will hopefully experience 2/2/22 and 3/3/33 as well as 4/4/44.)

Alas, I digress.

So, what can we take away from four one’s?

First of all, in binary (after all, don’t we all first think in binary?), the number is 15. So, I decided that today’s lucky number must be 15. Anything with 15 in it today will be great! Of course, I could not think of many things that might have 15, so I took a clue from numerology. I admit I know nothing about numerology – except one keeps adding numbers together (or maybe they don’t). Either way, that’s what I did. I added 1+5 and of course the number is “6.”
