Breaking the Eating Cycle: Why Bad Habits Trigger Bad Habits

May 5, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It’s important to understand that bad habits trigger bad habits.

I call it “The Eating Cycle.”

In a nutshell, here’s how it works.

Something “happens.” We react to the “something” with a variety of feelings (listed under reaction to the event). Our way of dealing with those feelings is to eat. When we eat too much, we gain weight. Because we do not like gaining weight, we have a reaction to the weight gain, which is usually one of those listed. That triggers us to eat, which causes us to gain weight. You can see the cycle goes on and on.

How to break the cycle?

If we eat too much, we’ll gain weight; there is no way around that. So, we can only break the cycle by reacting differently to the weight gain. In other words, reminding ourselves “it could have been worse,” or “we don’t do it as often as we used to,” or “realizing on the grand scale of things, a minor weight gain is not the end of the world.” That will minimize the urge to eat.

The other option is that we learn how to handle our reactions differently. So, if we’re frustrated, we call a friend (instead of eat). If we’re depressed, we take a walk (instead of eat). If we’re angry, we do some activity to work it out (instead of eat). We don’t have to do it very long, just for a few minutes, long enough to break the cycle.

Remember, you cannot drop a habit, you replace it with a different habit. What will you do to fill the void left by changing your habit? (If you need help, I’m here.)

Building Support

April 18, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

If you can’t have faith, have hope.

If you don’t have hope, have patience.

If you don’t have patience, have good friends.

Reach out. We are social beings, which explains why we build communities and relationships. It’s who we are at our core. Talk to someone. Remember, even powerful people have needs. Besides, when you share, you almost immediately feel better.

Call a friend. Send an email. Someone is there to help. You just need to ask.

Note: Every Monday, a new motivational memo is posted. Subscribers to ThisTimeIMeanIt.com’s coaching service get this – and many more benefits – sent to them directly. If you’d like to know more, follow this link.

Hopeful Image from Cairo

February 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

At times, it can be painful to watch what’s unfolding in Egypt. However, something that actually made me feel feel good just came across my desk. It’s a photo of who we can be when our better angels are upon us.

What you’re looking at are Christians forming a protective barrier around the Muslim protesters in Cairo so they can take time for their prayers without being attacked by the street thugs that surround the square.

We hear so much how religion can separate and divide. In this instance, it’s a true manifestation of it doing good. I feel better just looking at it.

To see the whole story, follow this link. There is also a video about the story below.

5 Things You Can Do to be Happier & More Successful Starting NOW

January 20, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Improving oneself is not difficult. It might be uncomfortable. It might be slow; but difficult? Not so much. Figure out what you want to change; figure out a way to do it, move in that direction, correct as necessary.

So why don’t most people change?

Our problem is we make it too complicated. Some of the reasons we do that include:

  • We think simplicity means lack of drive
  • We are setting ourselves up for failure to get people to leave us alone (read related post)
  • We think it will get us there faster

In reality, the simpler we make it, the more likely we will achieve it. We have built our lives over years with patterns and habits to fill our days. It’s as if we have built a brick fortress around us. If we try and make too many changes, we have to knock out huge sections of the fortress; we won’t do that. If we can just rearrange a few bricks, we’re more likely to fit that in (read related post here).

So, with that in mind, I offer a very simple Five-Step Plan to make change now.
