The 5 Year Rule

September 30, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Calendar-writing-on-self

Before getting upset, ask, “Will anybody really know or care about this five years from now?”

If the answer is “no,” take a deep breath, relax, and let it go.

Most things will be “no.”

If the answer is “yes,” you have a crisis on your hands and getting upset about it will not help you deal with it. Instead, come up with a rational plan to move forward.

This does not mean deny your feelings, rather deal with them when the crisis is over.

Every Monday, a new motivational memo is posted by Scott “Q” Marcus, Motivational Weight Loss Speaker and Life Balance and Productivity Expert. Making the Right Connections

August 28, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

ethernet-connectors

The internet is as essential a component in our lives as are the power lines that bring electricity to our houses and the roads that deliver products to our doors. Before branding that statement as hyperbole, let’s look at precedent. A century ago, electricity was a luxury. Now, can we image living without it? Indoor plumbing did not become standard until four score years ago. Anyone want an outhouse in his backyard? There are people — not very old people either — who are reading this who remember when getting a phone was a big thing.

Technologies evolve. Like it or not, we become dependent.

I reside on the web; communicating with vendors, providing services to clients, even looking up restaurants for our anniversary. (Be warned however, I do NOT play Farmville; your invitation shall be rebuffed.) The triple-W is about as important to my livelihood as PG&E is to delivering the juice that runs my computer. I could survive without it, sure, but it would — by no small amount — upend the quality of my life.

So I should have foreseen the turn of events that would transpire when I decided to “upgrade” my phone service. But, what can I say? I’m an optimist. Dreams die hard…

The crew that came out was friendly and efficient. Yet, within 24 hours, my internet service devolved into hit-and-miss connections; so much so that I could no longer hold phone conversations nor work on the web.

Not having only one contact in the loop, I call the phone provider; explaining the issue (over a series of clicks and clacks). They flip switches and read dials, (predictably) arriving at the conclusion the hitch is due to my cable company, not them.

“No so fast!” says cable technical support; informing me everything checks out on their end. “Replace your router,” is his solution.  The equipment manufacturer explains that their apparatus is A-OK, redirecting me to service provider number one, somehow providing a twisted sense of Zen to this now completed loop.

Yet I remain in the lurch, cyber-lonely, career faltering; web-less.

4 Tips to Improve Communications to Get More of What You Want

August 19, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

business-man-with-megaphone

Although we’ve been speaking since we were little, we tend to mess it up pretty regularly.

That’s actually to be expected because accurate communication is not determined by the sender but by the receiver. No matter how well you say something, if the person at the other end doesn’t hear it the way you meant it, the communication was poor.

Four things to remember to help minimize conflict and to be happier:

1) Know Your Intention

Before you communicate, ask yourself, “If all went perfectly, what would I want to happen from the result of this communication?”

For example, are you trying to impart information, get someone to change his or her behavior, express how you feel, make someone feel good (or bad)…

If you understand your intention first, it helps you craft your message better.

2) Choose Your Medium

Determine HOW you are are going to communicate what you want.

Advice to Husbands and Other Significant Others

July 31, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

People contact me about my column.

accountability, ask for helpMany want to share their thoughts or feelings about what I have written. Most times it’s by email, once in awhile by telephone, and periodically in person.

Some folks seem drawn to anyone in the media as moths go to light. This is flattering but can be, at times, well, just plain weird. I’ve been approached about government meat conspiracies, high fructose corn syrup alternative energy systems, even a faster-than-light engine (no, I don’t know how it was tied to my column). If cornered publicly with such theories, I momentarily feign attention, smile awkwardly, mumble an apologetic excuse about “a guy I’m supposed to meet,” and carefully; very, very slowly; back away.

There are those who offer to me the secret “they” don’t want “us” to know about weight loss — for a price of course. I am cynical about “secrets they don’t want us know.” For one, who are “they?” Secondly, why would they deem you to be the ultimate messenger of such vital intelligence? Moreover, are you putting us in harm’s way by passing it along? I would feel miserable knowing that — although I now lose weight quicker — it was at the cost of your life. Actually, I’d feel so darn guilty; I’d probably eat too much, gain back my weight and make your magnanimous (albeit mercenary) gesture to have been in vain.

What affects me most are those seeking counsel.

I’m not a therapist; heck, I’m not even sure I could be “Dear Abby.” But if my words touch someone so deeply that they seek me out for guidance, I’ll do my best.

Are you Independent or Stubborn?

July 1, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Are you independent or are you stubborn?

It’s a fine line between being “independent” and being “stubborn.”

Being independent means being able to get along and function on your own without needing anyone else’s help nor approval. It also means you are open to hearing other’s ideas and to learning better ways to move forward.

However, being stubborn means insisting that you know how to do what you do irrespective of evidence or offered support; even if it’s not getting the best results. Stubbornness means you’re more determined to get your way rather than get it done well. In reality, stubbornness harms relationships and holds you back.

It’s a sign of strength to ask for help when you need it. It’s a sign of maturity to recognize when you need the help.

Even strong independent people have areas where they need others.

Recognize them. Get help.

Then return the favor.
