Overcoming Perfectionism

September 26, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

Progress, not Perfection.

It’s actually a very simple formula to move forward when stuck.

Step one: Determine where you’re headed.
Step two: Take one step in that direction.
Step three: Adjust for barriers (emotional & physical)
Step four: Repeat as necessary.

The biggest problem we face is NOT that we cannot do it, but that we make the goal unrealistic.

Remember “Think 1st.”

Pick 1 thing (not several), make it Small enough that there’s no objection in your mind to doing it, make sure you do it Today.

Getting More Done

September 19, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

The only way in which we are all identical is that we each get 24 hours a day.

Some people just use it better – but no one gets any more time.

Those of us who are more successful simply better utilize our time.

One way in which we do that is to realize that even if we can’t carve out enough time from a hectic schedule to get everything done, we can squeeze in a few moments here and there.

For example, if you’re trying to be more fit, start holding in your stomach right now. Keep it that way while you search the web or read your emails. It takes no more time but helps you accomplish much more.

In other words, it’s better to get up and walk a block today, than to swear you’re going to run a mile tomorrow and sleep in. Remember, “Small steps done regularly generate more results than large steps done intermittently.”

What can you do RIGHT NOW to feel more successful? (Go do it.)

Monday Motivational Memo: Overcoming Sadness & Fear

August 22, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

When changing your habits, do not focus on what you have to give up; look toward what you will receive in the end.

Change involves letting go of something, whether it’s a relationship or a way of life. That can be sad or frightening. Since no one WANTS to feel those, we tend to hang on longer than it’s healthier or productive to do so.

If, however, we turn our attention towards what we will receive from the change, it’s more inspirational. We are more inclined to move in the direction of what we want.

If you’re feeling stuck in your progress, it helps to remind yourself more of why you’re moving forward and less of what you have to give up to get it.

Finding the Positives

August 1, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Catch yourself doing something RIGHT today.

This was actually triggered by something that happened to me today. I was moving a table to get to an electric socket. In the process, I knocked a ceramic mug of pens off the table. I caught the mug before it hit the ground and therefore prevented the pens from spilling all over the floor.

Monday Motivational Memo: Staying Motivated

July 25, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Before giving in, don’t say “I Won’t,” say “I won’t right now.”

Then wait 10 minutes and see what happens.

Will power is not the ability to say “I’ll never do it.  It’s the ability to say “I won’t do it right now.”

If we can take a few minutes and settle down what’s going on inside us, we have an opportunity to change it. To that end, tell yourself, “I will wait 10 minutes before I decide what to do.” Then, do something, anything, except what you were going to do. Make sure you change your environment – and for goodness sakes – don’t set a timer!

What usually happens is that the feeling passes. We get distracted. We go on to other things. Before we know it, 10 minutes has become 30 or 60. Once we realize how well we’ve done, we have the opportunity to feel good about our success instead of disappointed in giving in.

Even if you then decide to do what you were going to do, at least it’s now a choice and you don’t feel like you’re a victim to your own habits.
