Taking Care of Yourself During the Holidays

December 9, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Take a moment for you.

In case you had not noticed, it’s a very busy time of year.

During this time of year, there’s a whole lot to do.

Maybe, you’re buying and wrapping gifts, getting them to the post office, sending out cards, preparing special foods, shopping, traveling, welcoming guests, shopping,  decorating the house, and oh yes, did we say “shopping?”

In addition there’s that “money thing.” After all, it’s not like you can drop a note in the envelope to the bank and say, “I have a lot of other expenses. I’d like to pass on paying my mortgage.”

Add to all of that that your life doesn’t stop and it can be really cold (which seems to make things worse).

The combination of everything – whether you love or hate the holiday season – can be just plain stressful.

That’s why it’s essential you put aside some time every day to take care of you. Put things in priority. Slow down. Remember what matters.

If you don’t, who will take care of everything you’re supposed to do?

Setting Realistic Goals During the Holidays

December 2, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It’s okay to change your goals due to circumstances.

Simply because you have set a goal does not mean you are never allowed to change it.

As we move deeper into the holidays, it might be more difficult to stick to your goals (such as losing weight). That’s not a rationale for “giving up,” rather it’s an indication that you might want to adjust. After all, sticking to your program in January, when everyone else is doing it; is much easier than in December, when you feel like you’re all alone.

Adjust your goal to meet the conditions. Be realistic.

A goal “etched in stone” can be an excuse to give up when things get tough. Flexibility can be helpful.

You set the goals. They do not set you.

Overcoming Perfectionism

September 26, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

Progress, not Perfection.

It’s actually a very simple formula to move forward when stuck.

Step one: Determine where you’re headed.
Step two: Take one step in that direction.
Step three: Adjust for barriers (emotional & physical)
Step four: Repeat as necessary.

The biggest problem we face is NOT that we cannot do it, but that we make the goal unrealistic.

Remember “Think 1st.”

Pick 1 thing (not several), make it Small enough that there’s no objection in your mind to doing it, make sure you do it Today.

Overcome Setbacks

May 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Sometimes, things just don’t work out.

After setting ourselves back on the path toward our goal, many times, our inner perfectionist comes out and says, “I blew it! Well, as long as I blew it, I might as well really blow it. I can start again tomorrow (next week, next month, next year).”

That’s where the danger comes in. We have now given ourselves permission to do more damage.

Even if you “blow it” (by whatever definition you use for that term), the solution is in how fast you recover. We all make mistakes. Successful people actually make more of them. The difference is they recognize them as setbacks, get up, and move forward quickly.

When you slip up, simply remind yourself that the next thing you do can make it worse or start to fix it. Then, make the choice that will be helpful.
