Pray for Japan

March 12, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There but for the grace of God goes each of us.

I live in Northwest California. It’s a glorious place to live but it is  located along one of the most active geologic fault zones in the world. It’s hard not to think about earthquakes here; I’ve been through several. Yet never have I had to experience the horror and carnage of what the people across the Pacific are experiencing. It has really affected me because it could so easily happen here. I collected a series of images from the web that all share my sentiment.

These are not my images and I am sorry I cannot give credit to each as I don’t know from where they came, but I wanted to do something beyond donating money. Below are some places where you can donate. Following that is how to prepare for emergency.

Hopeful Image from Cairo

February 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

At times, it can be painful to watch what’s unfolding in Egypt. However, something that actually made me feel feel good just came across my desk. It’s a photo of who we can be when our better angels are upon us.

What you’re looking at are Christians forming a protective barrier around the Muslim protesters in Cairo so they can take time for their prayers without being attacked by the street thugs that surround the square.

We hear so much how religion can separate and divide. In this instance, it’s a true manifestation of it doing good. I feel better just looking at it.

To see the whole story, follow this link. There is also a video about the story below.

“We Need to Tone it Down on Both Sides”

January 11, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

There was a tragedy in Tucson last week which involved the shooting deaths of six innocent people and the wounding of more than a dozen, including the congress woman, Gabrielle Giffords, who represents that area. I’m sure you’re aware of it; you’d have to live in a hole to not to be.

At this writing, this horrific event does not seem motivated as much by politics (e.g. the Oklahoma Bombing) as it is by the fact that the shooter was mentally unstable, such as those at Columbine. (I’m sure this is small comfort to the families of the victims.) The fact that I can list examples (and I could provide more) of various shootings “by name” – and that you can understand the references – is a sad, discerning comment about the level of violence in which we find ourselves. As for the cause of the event, finger-pointing began per schedule. Blame will be assessed, and as with a New Year’s resolution, promises  will be made. For a brief moment, our awareness will be heightened and actions might be be taken. Unfortunately, also like those resolutions, these commitments will be abandoned in short order.

Positive Result?

One positive outcome arising from this tragedy (if “positive” can be the label applied to anything that comes of it) is the heightened scrutiny on the tone of the political discourse during this fractious era. Only time will tell if it was a partial cause in the shooter’s break with humanity; but it cannot be a bad thing to examine. [Read more…]

What Can we Learn from the Golden Voice Homeless Man?

January 6, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

I've been monitoring the whole Ted Williams (homeless man with the golden voice) story and I have to admit I'm sucked into it.

I found myself crying with joy over his newfound "Susan Boyle" discovery. But my question is "Why?"

I don't mind feeling the way I do. And as I posted previously, we respond to feelings, not logic. However, what is the deep connection that so many of us are feeling about this story? I know we would not connect as well if he had not had such a tough life – but he also brought that upon himself (which I say without judgment). If he was not humble, we wouldn't relate either. So, I know it's about overcoming obstacles and being your better self – but I think there's more to it.

I welcome comments. I want to continue with this story.

Obese Children and Bullying

August 2, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus

It was lousy growing up fat. Nothing was more degrading than buying my clothes in the “husky” section. Okay, maybe showering in front of a bunch of guys after high school P.E. was worse… or, wait, never dating… or, wait a second, here’s one: being teased behind my back – and for that matter – to my face… or, well… I guess there are countless things that suck about being a fat kid.

A recent study shows that obese children in grades three through six are more likely to be bullied than children of normal weight. Teen suicide due to bullying – an absolutely horrifying thought – has tragically been in the news a great deal, raising awareness of the psychological impact of constant harassment. Now we discover that it begins at an early age, with overweight children as the primary target.

Based on my own memories, I didn’t find this to be news. However, I had assumed, or maybe naively hoped, that things had changed. Not so, as researchers at the University of Michigan surveyed over 800 children ages eight to 11. In the third grade, 15 percent of the children were overweight and 17 percent were obese. A quarter of the students admitted to being bullied; with 45 percent of the mothers reporting that her child had been bullied for his or her weight. The odds of being bullied were 63 percent higher for children who were obese than their classmates of normal weight, and bullies did not discriminate based on gender or economic status. Overweight boys were just as likely as girls to be bullied, and even those with good social skills weren’t spared.
