When you don’t think you can accomplish your goal, it’s because you’re looking too far down the road.

© jonrawlinson.comYou’re thinking of all the things that could go wrong and of all the obstacles you must overcome, none of which exist if you can focus on the immediate.

When you’re overwhelmed and you’re afraid you won’t be able to achieve your goal, focus on what you can do right this minute.

Make it small enough that you’ll actually do it. [Read more…]

Identify Your 20%

May 5, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are two laws in the universe: Gravity, and the “80/20 Rule.”

In case you’re not familiar with the 80/20 Rule, it states that “Eighty percent of all results will come from 20% of all the effort.” In other words, if you have ever worked on a committee with 10 people, 80% of the work was done by 2 of the people.

How does this apply to habit change?

Habits are triggered by events, such as we eat (habit) because we’re stressed (event). To change your habits, you need to change how you handle the event. To change how you handle the event, you need to identify your triggers.

Here’s the good news.

The 80/20 rule tells us that we do not need to identify every single triggering event in our lives. If we identify the 20% of triggers that cause us the most trouble, we’ll fix our habit 80% of the time.

Fix your habit 80% of the time and you’re moving forward at incredible speed!

If you’re serious about changing your habits… [Read more…]

Expect Things to NOT go as you Want

April 28, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

woman-not-looking-where-goingIt’s great to make plans; they are necessary to help you get where you want.

Do not, however, make the mistake of expecting that simply because you made a plan, it will go as expected. That’s an exercise in futility.

It’s much smarter to assume that your plan will only go perfectly until you start it. After that, as they say, “Life is what happens while you’re making other plans.”

When things get tough, keep your head down and your eyes on the prize. (OK, that’s a mixed metaphor which technically would only make sense if your goal was to look at your shoes – but you get the point.)

Change Your Mind if You Want

April 21, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

woman-with-ball-and-chainNote: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  As part of that series, one of the things we went over were the “10 Commandments of Changing Habits.” This is one of those “commandments.”

Thou shalt be free from long-term binders.

Goal setting is not a prison sentence. Simply because you set a goal does not mean you have to carry it to the end. You are grown-up and you can decide at any time that your goal is not worth it and change your mind.

However, while on the path, go boldly and proudly.

Every Monday, a new motivational memo is posted by Scott “Q” Marcus, Motivational Weight Loss Expert for Baby Boomers and Life Balance and Productivity Expert. Subscribers to 21DayHabitChange.com and Scott’s coaching service get this – and many more benefits – sent to them directly. Give Yourself More Credit

Give unto thyself more credit.

Your self-talk is the biggest reason you are where you are, for better or worse. If you wish to be somewhere else, you must change first what you say to yourself.

Look for reasons you are successful, not for ways in which you messed up.
