Spinning in my Head: Driving Myself Crazy

April 26, 2017 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

You and I, we’ve been together quite some time, right?

So, if I let you in on my inner workings, you won’t think less of me? I mean, I’m opening myself up to being vulnerable, okay? Thanks.

There’s an expression: “Mother Nature bats last.” Well, yep, she sure does – and she hits it out of the park.

The original plan for this weekend was to drive south for a meeting with one of the companies with whom I work. Alas, the main highway between here and there is smothered with the third in a series of major rock and mud slides, cutting off traffic in both directions, with no estimated time of re-opening. It stands to reason that despite the valiant attempts of CalTrans to hold back the mountain, the road shall remain blocked, locking me in Humboldt unless I wish to add about eight hours of mountain driving each way. (For the record, I do not so wish.)

Welcome to life on the rustic, rocky, rural, redwood coast of northern California.

Look Backwards for Motivation

May 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-markIf you wish to be inspired, it makes more sense to look backwards, rather than forwards.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the road ahead looks daunting and intimidating; it seems to go on forever.

However, if you change your view and look at how far you’ve come, you’ll notice the changes you’ve already made, inspiring you to stay the course.

Give yourself credit for the road already traveled, take a deep breath, congratulate yourself for your accomplishments, and then – and only then – face forward and take one more step boldly towards your goal.

Expect Things to NOT go as you Want

April 28, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

woman-not-looking-where-goingIt’s great to make plans; they are necessary to help you get where you want.

Do not, however, make the mistake of expecting that simply because you made a plan, it will go as expected. That’s an exercise in futility.

It’s much smarter to assume that your plan will only go perfectly until you start it. After that, as they say, “Life is what happens while you’re making other plans.”

When things get tough, keep your head down and your eyes on the prize. (OK, that’s a mixed metaphor which technically would only make sense if your goal was to look at your shoes – but you get the point.)

Cherish the Milestones

January 8, 2013 by Featured Author

By Maddy Olson

I don’t know about everyone else, but 2012 has been a pretty rough year.

But here’s the thing: I feel like the higher powers are trying to teach me some lessons. Why? Because I have become complacent with my family…taking them very for granted and allowing life to pass us by. He knows I am full of love for them, but in the routine we get into, I don’t always make special time to build relationships.

My husband and I have a whole clan. I’m serious. I have four sons, he has four sons and a daughter. Since we have been married, we have acquired two daughter-in-laws, a son-in-law, and have a baby girl on the way. Recently, we lost a little grandson. I told you we were an enormous family!

Snap out of the normal goings on of your life and wake up to the vibrancy and love that encompasses you.

Overcome Setbacks

May 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Sometimes, things just don’t work out.

After setting ourselves back on the path toward our goal, many times, our inner perfectionist comes out and says, “I blew it! Well, as long as I blew it, I might as well really blow it. I can start again tomorrow (next week, next month, next year).”

That’s where the danger comes in. We have now given ourselves permission to do more damage.

Even if you “blow it” (by whatever definition you use for that term), the solution is in how fast you recover. We all make mistakes. Successful people actually make more of them. The difference is they recognize them as setbacks, get up, and move forward quickly.

When you slip up, simply remind yourself that the next thing you do can make it worse or start to fix it. Then, make the choice that will be helpful.
