Fear of Success vs Fear of Failure

April 9, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are few reasons why we do not achieve our dreams.

fear-of-success-&-failure

Yes, there are “acts of God.”

Philosophically, one might even accept fate or destiny as insurmountable barriers. Yet, aside from those, the immense majority of people living lives of quiet desperation reside there because of what’s going on in their minds more than on our planet. With credit to Walt Kelly, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” We — not others — are more times than not, our worst adversaries.

I mean this not in a condescending, judgmental manner, as one might hear from no-nonsense hyper-achievers, “Just pull yourself up from the bootstraps, suck it in, and get it done. Don’t be such a wimp!” One cannot change years of brain wave patterns in the same manner in which he switches on or off a light. Negative thoughts today — click — positive henceforth. My objective today is also not designed to illustrate how messed up we are; I don’t think that’s true, we’re all doing the best we know how to do.

With appropriate disclaimers admitted, if we accept that we are standing in our own way, it begs the question, “Why would we do that?” Why do we NOT reach further, dream larger, and believe better?

The primary answer is: Fear; Fear of Success, and its dastardly sibling, Fear of Failure.

Think Smaller for Better Results

Note: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  As part of that series, one of the things we went over were the “10 Commandments of Changing Habits.” This is one of those “commandments.”

Thou shalt think smaller

Make it Small and Do it NOWYou have made the process of changing too big and too complicated. You created your life in small, almost invisible steps. That is the way you will change it.

It sucks, but it’s true.

Don’t Expect Gurantees of Success

Expect not guarantees of success.

Setting goals does not guarantee you will get to have the results you want.

However, NOT setting them does guarantee that you will stay where you are.

Too Bad We Need Support, huh?

#5: Get support

Can we be really honest?

If you could achieve your goals on your own, you would have already done so, right? As they say, “Nothing changes if nothing changes,” and if you continue to try and muscle your way through it, you’re actually holding yourself back.

It’s important to remember that each of us is at times a teacher and other times a student. In some areas we show others the way forward. In others, we must be guided.

There is no shame in learning – and there is great courage in asking for help.

Reach out; there will always be a hand ready when you need it. (You’ll repay the favor later.)

Close the Back Door

February 3, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Note: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  Each week we’re taking a quick look at each of the five.

#4: Close the Back Door.

Табличка с надписью CLOSED висит на дверной ручке с шипамиDon’t leave yourself an escape route.

Make it as easy as possible to move forward and as difficult as possible to stop. Clean your environment of triggers and replace it with support.

Examples:

> If your goal is to lose weight, put your scale, measuring cups, and journal right in plain view.  Get rid of “red light foods.” As soon as you lose a size, get rid of your old clothes. Keeping them “just in case…” usually turns out to be “it just so happened…”

> If you’re goal is to walk more, put your walking shoes right in front of the door. Wear your pedometer wherever you go. Better yet, get a second pair and keep them in the where you can see them. Look for opportunities to walk.

Too often, because we mistakenly believe we “failed” before, we keep our goals secret.

That’s a mistake.

One of the best ways to close the back door is to tell anyone who cares about you what you’re doing and how they can help. If you decide to stop moving forward, that’s your option, but after closing the back door, it becomes a very conscious decision and you have to “own it,” rather than believing you were a victim and it “just happened.”

Remember: Don’t sneak into success; leap loudly with as much noise as you can make.
