Celebrating Tough Times

January 27, 2021 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

older man thinking

I can’t remember times as difficult as these, and I’ve been around the sun a few dozen times.

I — as well as you if you’re over 65 — am closer to the age of 100 than to the age of 30.

That is a truly remarkable thought when you let it sink in. I mean, remember, we were told not to trust anyone over 30 because they were “over the hill.” Looking at it through the eyes of immortal teens, 30 just seemed so, well, “old.” Of course, that decade flashed by in an instant, and at 40, we started to feel like grown-ups. Then, came the fifties, bifocals, a slightly expanded paunch, planning for retirement, and adult children (who were also fearing 30). Before you could say “I can now take money from my IRA without penalty,” the sixties knocked on the door.

It is the cycle of life. Despite magical thinking and a healthy dose of denial, to all, it finds its way.

Yet, again, as I’m sure for you too, aging doesn’t mean I’m going to curl up in a ball and wait for the grim reaper to knock on my door. I’m still vital and active. I still have dreams. After COVID has become a thing of the past, I will be on the road again, radio blasting, singing to my old faves as I head down that long ribbon of highway, hugging and visiting the people and places I’ve so missed.

As far as I know, I’ve still got several years ahead of me, so I’m back in school, studying a philosophy most of us equate with the “Law of Attraction.”

As a requirement for the class, we are required to journal regularly; something I’ve never done consistently.

Don’t misunderstand. I obviously like writing; this column in many ways is somewhat of a public journal. What holds me back is that I don’t like to write with a pen on paper. My mom wanted me to be a doctor; I learned to write as sloppily as one, but that’s as far as I got. So, to that end, if I record my thoughts in a journal, I won’t be able to decipher my hen scratches when I want to read them. I simply write too quickly, as I’m trying to keep up with my brain, which goes into overdrive. Should I slow down, while I’d be able to read it, my thoughts would evaporate before they got to paper; an empty journal is tragic.

Moreover, what happens if I have a life-changing revelation and my diary is not with me? Future generations will be deprived of my brilliance because I left my journal at home. How horrible would that be!

So, the obvious solution for a perfectionist like me who cannot do it perfectly? Don’t write.

Of late, however, I discovered the glories of an electronic journal, Day One, which syncs to all my mobile devices, computer, and even my watch. It allows me to record and tag my thoughts at any time, automatically logging the date, time, location, and even the weather at that moment. I can attach photos or images should I so choose.

One literally thought-provoking built-in feature is it asks a daily question, ranging from “what is your dream chocolate bar?” to “what happens when you die?” [Read more…]

Looking Through Pin Holes

June 28, 2017 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Jimmy was lying on a knoll in the middle of a meadow on a warm spring day staring up at the puffy white clouds as they rolled by, leading him to consider the big questions we all face:

What is the meaning of life? Why do we exist? Is there intelligence beyond the stars? What is the nature of God?

“God? Are you really there?” Jimmy said out loud.

To his astonishment a voice came from the clouds. “Yes, Jimmy? What can I do for you?”

Startled by the response but unwilling to let such an opportunity pass, Jimmy asked, “God. You exist in all places and across time. What is a million years like to you?”

Knowing that Jimmy could not understand the concept of infinity, God responded in a manner to which Jimmy could relate. “A million years to me, Jimmy, is like a minute to you.”

“Oh,” said Jimmy, considering the thought for a moment. “Well, then, what’s a million dollars like to you?”

God replied again, “A million dollars to me, Jimmy, is like a penny.”

“Wow!” remarked Jimmy, getting an idea. “God, you’re so generous, can I have one of your pennies?”

God answered, “Sure thing, Jimmy! Just give me a minute.”

The concepts of infinite and forever are simply too immense for us to wrap our brains around — at any age.

As a child, first beginning to grasp the expansiveness of the Universe, the image that came to my young mind was somewhere “out there” would be a boarded-up wall, much like one would see on an abandoned building, which marked the end of Space. That lead to the next question, “What’s on the other side?” All I could imaging was another wall, and another, and another…

Decades have passed and the perception of infinite is still beyond my comprehension.

Trusting the Universe

March 16, 2016 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Stars of a planet and galaxy in a free space

Stars of a planet and galaxy in a free space

First point: Albert Einstein – no shrinking Violet in the field of deep thought – said, “I think the most important question facing humanity is, ‘Is the universe a friendly place?’”

He put forth three alternatives:

Option One: the Universe is unfriendly. In that case, we use our technology, science and resources to be safe by creating bigger walls to keep out the unfriendliness and bigger weapons to destroy all that which is unfriendly. He went on to add, “We are getting to a place where technology is powerful enough that we may either completely isolate or destroy ourselves as well in this process.”

The second alternative is that the Universe is neither friendly nor unfriendly and that God is essentially “playing dice with the universe.” Should this be accurate, we are simply victims to the random toss of the dice and our lives have no real purpose or meaning.

That leaves one other choice: The Universe is a friendly place. In this instance, we will use our technology, science, and resources to create tools and models to understand it “because power and safety will come through understanding its workings and its motives.”

He made no final call except to say, “God does not play dice with the universe.”

Point two: Our current political dialog resembles more an elementary school playground fight than a contest for the most powerful office in land. There’s a gag-worthy political stench wafting through the discourse.

No one likes it (well, no one that’s rational at least). To change it, some respond by shouting, “We need to fight. It’s time to get angry.”

Don’t get me wrong; I am angry too. However, I’m inviting other to share in my campaign: “Compassion first. I’d rather be happy than right.”

It doesn’t mean I’m rolling over; this is not an “either-or” thing.

Identify Your 20%

May 5, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are two laws in the universe: Gravity, and the “80/20 Rule.”

newton-hit-on-head-by-apple

In case you’re not familiar with the 80/20 Rule, it states that “Eighty percent of all results will come from 20% of all the effort.” In other words, if you have ever worked on a committee with 10 people, 80% of the work was done by 2 of the people.

How does this apply to habit change?

Habits are triggered by events, such as we eat (habit) because we’re stressed (event). To change your habits, you need to change how you handle the event. To change how you handle the event, you need to identify your triggers.

Here’s the good news.

The 80/20 rule tells us that we do not need to identify every single triggering event in our lives. If we identify the 20% of triggers that cause us the most trouble, we’ll fix our habit 80% of the time.

Fix your habit 80% of the time and you’re moving forward at incredible speed!

If you’re serious about changing your habits… [Read more…]

Understand the Rules of the Universe

April 9, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are rules to the universe.

They cannot be broken nor changed to suit your whims or fantasies.

Complaining about them will not help.

Instead, learn them and use them wisely.

It’s normal to get frustrated about “the way things are” instead of “the way they should be.” That’s part of life.

It’s also okay to feel the frustration or anger. The problem presents itself when we let those feelings overcome us, causing us to remain stagnant – or even to fall backwards.

Feel the disappointment or frustration.

Then, get some support and move through it, learning from the experience.

You will get better results and you’ll also be happier.
