Say What?

December 5, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

“How much can I take off before I get weighed?” She asked.

A common question, I countered with my pat reply, “You are limited by your own standard of decency.” When I am queried about how much clothing one can shed, I know that the person I am about to weigh is having a rough time; I try and deliver the reply with humor.

She pondered that for a brief moment, forced a chuckle, then faced the scale and began shedding everything that weighed more than her earrings; should the jewelry have been more substantial, I assume she would have rid herself of them also.

“OK, let’s get it over with,” she said dropping her jacket and purse on to a nearby chair and sliding out of her shoes. “I’m really scared.” Most dieters prefer a root canal or IRS tax audit to facing the scale on a day when the number inches northward. Judging by the lack of enthusiasm she showed in today’s weight check, I would not have lost money should I have bet that she fell within that category.

“This won’t be pretty,” she whimpered, “I’ve been really bad.”

“Bad?” I asked. “Did you beat up people in the streets? Rob banks? Were you engaged in an illicit affair, inflicting severe emotional distress on your husband and children?”

“Well, no, of course not. But, I just didn’t stop eating all weekend. I don’t know what came over me. It’s like I didn’t care. There’s no other way to describe it; I was just awful. I can’t believe what an idiot I am.”

It’s odd how we use words, isn’t it?

How to Forgive After a Divorce

November 20, 2012 by Featured Author

by Neil Keifer

When most people get married they hope it will last throughout their lifetime. However, sometimes that’s simply not the case. When two people get a divorce it can often turn ugly. This can leave both parties with resentment towards things done and said during a divorce. In order to move forward it is necessary to forgive the other party and move on. There are several key things to keep in mind if you have gone through a divorce and are trying to begin the healing process. [Read more…]

Waiting for Miracles That Hever Happen

November 7, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Some rather odd happenstances have occurred lately.

Item 1: While walking down “I” street listening to a podcast, the host were discussing companies associated with presidential candidate, Mitt Romney. One organization, Stericycle, commands the bulk of their conversation.

Until that moment, I never heard of Stericycle. Until that instant, I never saw anything associated with Stericycle. And, at that exact second, a Stericycle truck rumbles up next to me.

“What a weird coincidence,” I thought. “One minute prior and I would not have noticed it. One minute later and I would not have been here.” I am astonished.

Item 2: A couple days later, a client offers to put me up in the Wingate Hotel in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Hours later, the main character in the book I’m reading decides travel will clear her head. Of all the locales, towns, and inns on this this enormous planet, the author chooses the exact identical Wingate Hotel in Latrobe.

“Freaky,” I thought, dropping my book. Although my client decided to let me find my own lodging, two powerful coincidences in a row have me uneasy.

Item 3: I recall a long-lost friend from the eighties, wondering how he is faring these days. No problem, he calls that day to tell me.

Item last: I am reminded of a movie I haven’t seen in decades. My DVR “accidentally” records it that night. What are the odds?

As Freud purportedly said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

I get it. A coincidence is exactly that. Yet, I can’t help wonder when so many wash up one after another like waves on beach, might there be meaning? [Read more…]

Seeking Long-Term-Relationship, Must Share Common Values

October 24, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus

We are imperfect beings; therefore so too are our relationships.

We engage mouth before activating brain. We dismiss our partner’s concerns as irrelevant. We can be inconsiderate, petty, or cranky. It’s part of the human condition; we mess up, and since we live with others, we hurt them. We don’t intend to — but we cannot deny that we do. It matters not how much energy you put into it, nor how long you’ve been together; even the finest relationships cause some pain.

At our end of days, should we be so fortunate to take inventory of our most important relationships and can proclaim them as  “good” more times than not; then indeed they were “good.”

A successful long-term-relationship is not without flaw; rather, it:

  • Incurs less damage during conflicts
  • Recovers from that hurt more quickly and fully
  • Tilts the scale in the direction of “happy” rather than “unhappy”

Short of choosing the wrong partner — those whose relationships fall asunder did not necessarily disagree more often than those with “good” relationships. Instead they had unrealistic expectations, conflating conflict with failure; and did not possess a method to handle disagreement when it raised its unpleasant, but unavoidable, head.

When any relationship is smack dab in the midst of a “rough patch,” our initial reaction is to flee the pain.
