Look Backwards for Motivation

May 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-markIf you wish to be inspired, it makes more sense to look backwards, rather than forwards.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the road ahead looks daunting and intimidating; it seems to go on forever.

However, if you change your view and look at how far you’ve come, you’ll notice the changes you’ve already made, inspiring you to stay the course.

Give yourself credit for the road already traveled, take a deep breath, congratulate yourself for your accomplishments, and then – and only then – face forward and take one more step boldly towards your goal.

Creatures of Habit

April 30, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus

Have you ever really truly analyzed how much of what we do is by rote?

habit-creature

Paying for groceries, the clerk asks,
“How are you?”

Our expected reply, stated without thought:
“Fine, how are you?”

Continuing the script she responds, “Great,” and upon finishing the transaction, adds the obligatory, “Have a nice day.”

Did she really care?

Should we opt to spill our guts about the problems we’re having with aging, would she request the other shoppers stand elsewhere while she counseled, consoled, and cajoled us? Survey says: Not a chance. The brief exchange near the cash register is a pre-ordained, almost-required, nicety; it’s just “what we do.”

That just scratches the surface; dig deeper and discover how much of our lives are run by autopilot.

Picture a typical weekday; we either arise with the help of an alarm — that pushes us to consciousness at the exact same moment as every other weekday — or we don’t use one at all. Upon rising, patterns control everything from the order of our morning constitutional to the clothes we choose. We are either “breakfast eaters” — or not. It’s not “I am” one day and “I’m not” the next. The average grocery store stocks over 40,000 items; yet even those of us who opt for breakfast choose from fewer than a handful of items every morning, the same selections we had yesterday and will eat tomorrow.

Fear of Success vs Fear of Failure

April 9, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are few reasons why we do not achieve our dreams.

fear-of-success-&-failure

Yes, there are “acts of God.”

Philosophically, one might even accept fate or destiny as insurmountable barriers. Yet, aside from those, the immense majority of people living lives of quiet desperation reside there because of what’s going on in their minds more than on our planet. With credit to Walt Kelly, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” We — not others — are more times than not, our worst adversaries.

I mean this not in a condescending, judgmental manner, as one might hear from no-nonsense hyper-achievers, “Just pull yourself up from the bootstraps, suck it in, and get it done. Don’t be such a wimp!” One cannot change years of brain wave patterns in the same manner in which he switches on or off a light. Negative thoughts today — click — positive henceforth. My objective today is also not designed to illustrate how messed up we are; I don’t think that’s true, we’re all doing the best we know how to do.

With appropriate disclaimers admitted, if we accept that we are standing in our own way, it begs the question, “Why would we do that?” Why do we NOT reach further, dream larger, and believe better?

The primary answer is: Fear; Fear of Success, and its dastardly sibling, Fear of Failure.

Can Self-Sabotage Drive You to Personal Growth

February 27, 2014 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

red_bombWho could possibly imagine that a thing like self-sabotage can actually drive you to personal growth?

Moreover, addiction to drugs (believed to be a kind of self sabotage) can also help in self expression and personal growth. You will have your eyebrows raised at that. Don’t get me wrong, I am not promoting narcotics. It’s just a scientifically proven fact that some drugs turn on the switch to imagination.

There was this woman who became addicted to drugs because it gave her the feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction. Her doctors tried to explore the reasons behind the drawing force and they found that she was alone and felt bored most of the times. This feeling turned her more anxious and she dreaded the pressure in her job. She once had a chance to go on a vacation with her friends where she had a great time.

There was no pressure and no worry in the world while she was on this vacation. By the end of the vacation, she started to feel low again so she took the drug to get that timeless experience once again where she had no responsibilities and can let her imagination fly free. Nevertheless, drugs including sleeping pills will always have some side-effects. Knowing that, she took the drug because that imaginative feeling of being free will always return.
