Look Backwards for Motivation

May 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-markIf you wish to be inspired, it makes more sense to look backwards, rather than forwards.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the road ahead looks daunting and intimidating; it seems to go on forever.

However, if you change your view and look at how far you’ve come, you’ll notice the changes you’ve already made, inspiring you to stay the course.

Give yourself credit for the road already traveled, take a deep breath, congratulate yourself for your accomplishments, and then – and only then – face forward and take one more step boldly towards your goal.

Embrace the Rough Patches

Note: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  Each week we’re taking a quick look at each of the five.

#3: Embrace the Rough Patches.

Just because the road has bumps doesn’t mean it’s not the correct road.

Difficult times don’t throw us off; it’s mistakenly believing that we wouldn’t have difficult times that throws us for a loop.

If we think it’s a straight shot from here to there, when we do hit a barrier we think, “It’s all over! I’ve lost my mojo.”

Even the best relationships cause some pain. However, we don’t dump our partner just because we don’t see eye-to-eye. We work through it. Expect that there will be difficult times – and expect you’ll work through it.

Since 80% of setbacks are caused by the same couple of issues repeated over and over and over again, a rough patch – if handled correctly – gives us an opportunity to finally get past a long-term barrier we’ve had that’s consistently held us back, probably causing relapses.

If we handle it well, we’ll NEVER have to face it again.

Overcoming Disappointment & Setbacks

October 24, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There is no such thing as failure; merely feedback.

Slip-ups are inevitable.

The difference between someone who succeeds and someone who doesn’t is the way she reacts to it.

Successful people look at it as a setback. Yes, they might be frustrated. No, they aren’t happy about it. But, they realize that they can go at it again after making some changes.

People who do not achieve their goals “freak out” when things don’t go the way they want. They look at it as failure and the end of the road. The immediately follow up thought to that is, “As long as it didn’t work, why bother to keep trying?” They quit.

When things don’t go the way you want, it’s OK to be disappointed but look at what didn’t work; figure out how to change it; and go at it again.

Overcome Setbacks

May 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Sometimes, things just don’t work out.

After setting ourselves back on the path toward our goal, many times, our inner perfectionist comes out and says, “I blew it! Well, as long as I blew it, I might as well really blow it. I can start again tomorrow (next week, next month, next year).”

That’s where the danger comes in. We have now given ourselves permission to do more damage.

Even if you “blow it” (by whatever definition you use for that term), the solution is in how fast you recover. We all make mistakes. Successful people actually make more of them. The difference is they recognize them as setbacks, get up, and move forward quickly.

When you slip up, simply remind yourself that the next thing you do can make it worse or start to fix it. Then, make the choice that will be helpful.
