Your Life is Yours to Run (or Not)

February 24, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Note: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  As part of that series, one of the things we went over were the “10 Commandments of Changing Habits.” This is one of those “commandments.”

Thy Life is Thine Own Creation

You set up your life to get what you are; it is not a fluke of nature.
It took work and planning, possibly unintentionally, but you built it. If it no longer serves you, you have to undo it.

However, since you built it – you can unbuild it.

However, you built it slowly, day by day, step by step.

Be patient while you rearrange it. It will take time.

There’s Nothing Worse…

February 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I am not a snob; anyone who meets me would agree.

snob manWell, except those of an obviously lesser bloodline, of course. But, who cares about them anyway?

Having placed that firmly on the table, I know I can be, um, shall we say, “particular” about certain things and at times, might be prone to splash myself with a faint — very faint — scent of curmudgeonly, especially around speaking and writing.

As illustration, this is the second month of the year, pronounced “Feb-RU-ary,” not “Feb-U-ary.” Should you doubt, you can find out that I’m correct at the li-BRARY (not the “li-BARY”).

I manage to keep my mouth about “Febuary” because one only has to deal with it for 28 days a year.

Yet, lasting seemingly in perpetuity is misuse of  “your” and “you’re.”

The former is possessive while the latter is a contraction for, “you are.” Therefore, one would not write, “Your looking thin,” nor “I love what your doing with the house.” One might however write,

“When you’re on your way over, please let your hosts know if you’re bringing your children.”

See, isn’t that nicer?

Finally can we clarify that those of us on diets are attempting to “lose” weight, not “loose” it? (Ironically, “loose weight” is usually what started us on the path to “losing weight.”)

However, the expression that causes my head to explode is the self-important exaggeration, “There’s nothing worse than…”

This rose to my awareness on a TV commercial for an on-line postage service. In touting its (not “it’s”) benefits, a gentleman exasperatingly laments, “There’s nothing worse than standing in line at the post office.”

You Are Complete As You Are

10-commandments

Thou Art Complete From the Beginning

You are fine just the way you are. You are entitled to be happy even if you have bad habits.

If you are changing your habits to be a “better person,” there’s no need.

If you are changing your habits to be a happier or healthier person, go for it.

Becoming a Statistic

February 12, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Worldometers.info is an extremely easy-to-navigate web site.

lots-of-numbers

On one page, one can watch “real time world statistics” on all classes of information. For example, as I write this at 10:12 in the morning 83,036,521,929 emails had already been sent TODAY. (Incidentally, in the time it took me to type that last sentence, the total increased by more than 210 million.)

A smattering of other attention-grabbing statistics:

  • There are 2,908,626,597 internet users in the world (growing rapidly)
  • 288,076 new books have been published so far this year (My future daughter-in-law accounts for one of those!)
  • There have been 1,683,340,798 Google searches so far today (three of which were mine)

I was fascinated to discover that are about 1.5 billion overweight and 529 million obese folks on the planet compared to 894 million undernourished. (it appears if we could move some of our food from the “haves” to the “have nots,” it would benefit all.) Relatedly, obesity has cost the United States economy over 245 million dollars today alone and approximately 86.5 million dollars have been shelled out on weight loss programs in that same period.

If you’re into stats, the site will suck you in like a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

Our planet is crowded – and growing more at a net rate of about 2.2 people per second (4.1 born and 1.9 die). As of February 12, 2014 we share our planet with 7,212,822,888 other individuals. Using those same numbers, approximately 361,000 will inhale their first breath today while sadly,173,500 will take their last.

Not one of those souls is more important than any other.

Abhaya’s family in India will grieve as deeply over her loss as will Monica’s children in California. Having said that, some names reach a stratospheric level of recognition in their time here; one of which was Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a gifted actor by any measure.

Too Bad We Need Support, huh?

February 10, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Note: We recently launched of a seminar series, “Five Things You Must Know To Make Your Life Better.”  Each week we’re taking a quick look at each of the five. This is the last one of the five.

#5: Get support

group of friends

Can we be really honest?

If you could achieve your goals on your own, you would have already done so, right? As they say, “Nothing changes if nothing changes,” and if you continue to try and muscle your way through it, you’re actually holding yourself back.

It’s important to remember that each of us is at times a teacher and other times a student. In some areas we show others the way forward. In others, we must be guided.

There is no shame in learning – and there is great courage in asking for help.

Reach out; there will always be a hand ready when you need it. (You’ll repay the favor later.)
