Fun Stuff About New Year’s Resolutions

January 6, 2016 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

One might think that since my professional life orbits in the galaxy of helping people change their habits for good that I might be a fan of New Year’s Resolutions.

Alien monster making resolutions

One might think that. However, one would be wrong.

Don’t misunderstand; I believe that any time one wants to make a change for the better it’s perfect. Should the passing of another year be the inspiration for that alteration, I’m all for it. However, the swing side of this first-of-the-year obsession is that each January, everyone and their brother is mouthing, “This year, I promise to…” – yet, they don’t. Blah, blah, blah. Moreover, the whole “New Year’s resolution thing” provides cover for the whole “over indulgence thing” that runs from each October through December. After all, one can fall back on the rationale; “I’ll get back in control next year. Give me another serving please; don’t be shy with the gravy.”

Anyway, I’m riding a little high on my horse. I apologize. Bottom line is that the best time to make a resolution is when you’re actually committed to doing it, whether that is January 1, March 22, or October 5. As the ad says, “just do it.”

Yet, as long as I’ve taken us this far down the road, let’s drive on and see what there is. [Read more…]

The Miracle TV Diet

July 9, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I attempt to source all facts I reference.

First, it’s the ethical thing to do. Secondly, most of these fascinating freaky factoids are found via the World Wide Web and much data floating in cyberspace is, well quite frankly, ka-ka. So, in attempting to validate a statistic I heard, I discovered a few fascinating facts about these bodies in which we live.

Since I’m turning 60 soon, I found it fascinating that according to HowStuffWorks.com, by that age, 60 percent of men and 40 percent of women snore; with the average snort volume hovering around 60 decibels, about the same loudness as standard speech. Not to be outdone, some punch out more than 80 decibels while slumbering, about as loud as a pneumatic drill breaking concrete. Related fact: According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, one-third of all Americans has hearing loss by age 65, which now makes complete sense since we’re sleeping next to pneumatic drills eight hours a night.

According to a report from Brazil, human hair grows a little less than 2/100 of an inch per day.

Becoming a Statistic

February 12, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Worldometers.info is an extremely easy-to-navigate web site.

lots-of-numbers

On one page, one can watch “real time world statistics” on all classes of information. For example, as I write this at 10:12 in the morning 83,036,521,929 emails had already been sent TODAY. (Incidentally, in the time it took me to type that last sentence, the total increased by more than 210 million.)

A smattering of other attention-grabbing statistics:

  • There are 2,908,626,597 internet users in the world (growing rapidly)
  • 288,076 new books have been published so far this year (My future daughter-in-law accounts for one of those!)
  • There have been 1,683,340,798 Google searches so far today (three of which were mine)

I was fascinated to discover that are about 1.5 billion overweight and 529 million obese folks on the planet compared to 894 million undernourished. (it appears if we could move some of our food from the “haves” to the “have nots,” it would benefit all.) Relatedly, obesity has cost the United States economy over 245 million dollars today alone and approximately 86.5 million dollars have been shelled out on weight loss programs in that same period.

If you’re into stats, the site will suck you in like a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

Our planet is crowded – and growing more at a net rate of about 2.2 people per second (4.1 born and 1.9 die). As of February 12, 2014 we share our planet with 7,212,822,888 other individuals. Using those same numbers, approximately 361,000 will inhale their first breath today while sadly,173,500 will take their last.

Not one of those souls is more important than any other.

Abhaya’s family in India will grieve as deeply over her loss as will Monica’s children in California. Having said that, some names reach a stratospheric level of recognition in their time here; one of which was Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a gifted actor by any measure.
