Combatting Emotional Distress is Not a Challenge Anymore

August 27, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Is it worth being upset?

Emotions are an indispensable part of human life.

However, at times you might find it difficult to deal with the ones that pull your energies down. The problem begins when you carry the emotional distress for long and it begins to influence negatively your personal and professional life.

Depressive mood, irritability, self-criticism and disappointment are some of the common symptoms signaling that you are undergoing a problem. They may be attributed to an emotionally hard-hitting experience of your life.

You need to stop pitying yourself and feeling helpless for not being able to control your emotions. Hiding away or avoiding your pain is never the solution for it can put you on a self-destructive path by resorting to wrong methods such as use of drugs or alcohol. Clear your mind and think of the healthy ways to deal with the situation. [Read more…]

How to be Happier – Quickly

July 8, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Where you are in life is basically the result of the behaviors and choices you have chosen to do and take so far.

Those choices are based in large part on how you viewed the world at the time, which is what we call “attitude.”

Your attitude is “the complex interaction between feelings and beliefs that affect how you view the world – and therefore how you react to it.”  Therefore, your attitude is made up out of feelings and your beliefs, which stem from your thoughts.

Attitude Cycle

So, to make your life happier, take a moment to make your next thought happier.

Repeat whenever possible.

Our Feelings are Our Own

Woman screaming at phone.

Nobody makes anybody feel anything.

We learn to react to events by feeling certain ways. We can learn to react differently if we want to.

It won’t always be easy but it’s definitely  worth it.

The Most Important Question

April 10, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-mark

You followed a passage faithfully through a lush forest, now standing at a fork in that path; one bearing leads slightly northwest, the other, tending to the southwest. Standing at this juncture, you place your hand over your eyes to block the glare of the setting sun, and strain while scanning the horizon. Ahead lays a long, grassy, seemingly endless prairie with hills on either horizon, obstructing your view from where each trails leads.

Yet, you have stood in this place before.

You know with certainty that in one direction lays a picturesque, emerald city, chock-full of light, music, and gladness. In that township is great joy and contentment. Should you opt however for road number two, what waits at its terminus is far less glorious, resembling the ruins of the firestorms of Dresden. There lies darkness and foreboding, sadness and frustration.

Although either direction assures you a safe arrival at your destination, the route to happiness is rocky, long, and hilly; it will require effort. Its alternative beckons with a flat, easy-to-navigate, and well-worn, shorter course.

Which path do you choose?

We’d all like to say that we’d choose the first. After all, look what waits at the end of either. It’s a no-brainer.

Yet, when we analyze our histories, the reality is that too often, we opt for the alternative; the smoother, shorter, easier pathway guaranteed to lead in the end to a sense of defeat and unhappiness.

Let’s examine some real-life situations, shall we?

Stick with your diet for one more hour and go to bed happy and proud, or give in and eat the bag of chips now, berating yourself all day tomorrow for tonight’s poor decision. Which do you choose?

Hold your tongue until you can figure out a more productive way to bring up your frustration to your wife, or let loose with a blast of heated epithets driving a hurtful spike in your most important relationship. Which do you do?

Put $200 away into your retirement fund, knowing it will be out of reach for the next decade, or buy a new TV even though you don’t need one. “A” or “B” please?

Lessons From Goodbye: How Death Can Teach You To Live

March 16, 2013 by MikeTremba Leave a Comment

woman saying farewellThere is no happy way to bid someone you love a final farewell.

At best, it’s a melancholy affair; at worst, it’s a heartbreaking loss from which you’re sure you can never recover.

Consolation can feel impossible after the loss of someone dear to you. While you know, deep down, that death is an integral part of life, a piece of you goes wherever your loved ones do, and when they pass, the piece goes with them.

Without death, room for new growth would never be made. Progress forward can’t happen without losses from the past. From every farewell, there comes a new hello.

These are among the multitude of wise lessons to be learned from a person in the last leg of their life—either directly from their words, or merely through their experiences. Knowing how to approach the situation as a learning experience will help you move through the process and maintain your own life.

Hindsight, and why it’s wrong

Any of us who’ve been at the bedside of someone we care dearly for while they move from this world to the next knows a few things:

  1. The dying have regrets that make us question our own
  2. Vicinity to sickness creates hyper-awareness of our own health
  3. You always wish it were you on that bed, and not them
