Overcoming Fear

April 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the overcoming.

Fear is usually something that happens when we get too far into the future. Most of the time, we’re doing all right in the present tense. But, something happens and we spin it out into the future. We imagine “worst case scenarios,” picturing all that could go wrong rather than what could go right. Because we are painting the negative so boldly, our emotions adjust, our bodies tighten, we become frightened.

Take Time to be in Awe

March 21, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Look at the world with awe as often as possible.

Sometimes it’s difficult – especially during stressful times – to stay inspired and to take joy in the day-to-day happenings of life. Between a job, family, responsibilities, and the general state of the world, life can feel overwhelming. At times like these, it is especially important to stop for a minute, take a deep breath, and look for the beauty that surrounds you. It might not feel much, but it’s there – and you are a part of it. Then, before you do anything else, spread that feeling by complimenting the next person you see.

Motivational Monday Memo: Being Grateful

March 14, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Take a moment each day to realize how fortunate you are – especially when it doesn’t seem like it.

Believe it or not, studies have shown that we are “hard wired” to look for the negatives. When we feel things are difficult or messed up, it affects our mood. When our mood is depressed, our attitude changes. When our attitude changes, others around us react to it, furthering the underlying thought that everything stinks.

Take a moment as you read this to remind yourself of something positive. Be grateful you have that moment. Then, pass along a positive thought to the next person with whom you interact.

This post was partially inspired by what is happening in Japan. Read the post about what you can do.

Motivational Monday Memo: Avoiding Procrastination

March 7, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Don’t tell yourself you can’t.

Instead, simply say “Not right now.” Many times, you’ll find a way later.

At times, it feels like there’s too much to do, so you feel overwhelmed, opting to do nothing. Instead, give yourself a 10-minute break. Do something else. Decide again later. Give yourself a break, both literally and figuratively.
