Ten Tips for a Stress Free Life

April 19, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

By Vijaya Jayaraman

(Editors Note: This is from ezinearticles.com; full information is at the end of the article.)

Stress is more likely to topple you, if you’re not taking care of yourself. Put yourself first. These ten tips can help you stay on course:

1. Make time for yourself. Learn to relax for half hour daily. That will bring relief from chronic stress. Listen to the music you like, draw pictures or paint or dance. I often sit in my backyard and watch the birds eat and drink. Observing nature relaxes you. Just drive to a distance and learn to appreciate mountains or water. Read a book of interest in that atmosphere. Explore and do what works best for you.

2. Learn to relax: Take a deep breath. Close one nostril and breath through the other for 15 seconds, hold the air for 15 seconds and release through the same nostril for 15 seconds. Do this seven times through one nostril and repeat with the other. This will enhance the oxygen in your lungs by means of deep breathing.

3. Observe your thoughts. Avoid negative thought like ‘ I am hurt, someone said this or I have lost my job what will happen to my future, children are not doing well, my health is not good;. On the contrary encourage positive thoughts in your mind by sayings the same as ‘I am not hurt, this is part of the game, people have their own opinions, or I need this break and I should be alright in the future, my children are children they will get better. My health will improve when I eat right, exercise’. Your thoughts are in your control. Learn to manage your thoughts.

4. Exercise regularly. Exercise can help keep depression and anxiety at a distance. Just 30 minutes a day benefits the body and the mind. Regular walking, water aerobics, swimming helps your entire body. [Read more…]

Giving Thanks for Wherever You Are On the Journey

March 31, 2011 by Featured Author

Give thanks for what you are now, and keep fighting for what you want to be tomorrow.  ~Fernanda Miramontes-Landeros

Give thanks for what you are now. That’s not easy when you’re not happy with what you are now.  But, you’ve got to start somewhere, so why not start with exactly who you are today?  That was the first step on my journey towards better health and happiness in my life – getting honest about who I really was, and accepting that as my starting place.  That’s something you can do right now

Here’s how I got honest.  I was 287 pounds, in physical and emotional pain and I knew I needed to change things.  I didn’t know where to begin, so I asked my doctor.  My doctor had been telling me for years that I needed to drop some weight, and I got angry and resentful every, single time.  It took a lot of nerve for me to walk into his office and say, “Okay, let’s say you’re right, I do need to lose some weight.  Where do I start?”

He referred me to a nutritionist.  After my first meeting with her, she asked me to start a ‘Food Journal.’  In it, I was to write down everything I ate for a week.  She asked me not to edit my food choices yet.  “Just eat what you’d normally eat, and write it down after you’re finished,” she said.  I bought myself a new notebook on the way home from the appointment, and I was very excited about starting the next day.  Then came the morning, and suddenly I was angry.  I don’t know where it came from – this defiance, this rebellion.  Suddenly I was thinking, “I’ll show her what I eat everyday!”  And I went off to the doughnut shop and bought six of my favorites and ate them all, with a quart of milk, for breakfast.  And I wrote it all down.  Then for lunch, I was feeling guilty, so I made myself a salad.  It was a large salad, loaded with cheese, beans, and plenty of dressing, but I felt less guilty about that than I did about the doughnuts.  Again, I recorded it all in my journal – this time with measurements.  I had two snacks that afternoon – 18 vanilla wafers and two pudding cups, and “a bag of trail mix.” I’m quoting from the journal here.  For dinner, I fixed spaghetti.  I wrote that I ate a “full plate of spaghetti,” which was a lot.

The week continued on like this.  Looking back now, even though I seemed to be eating with a vengeance, I don’t recall feeling as though I ate more in this particular week than I did most of the time.  Eating a half-dozen doughnuts was nearly a weekly ritual.  I’d just never made note of it before. Two snacks in the afternoon – pretty common for me.  I didn’t feel fuller than usual, and I didn’t get a stomach ache from eating like this, so the guilt and shame I felt when showing my journal to the nutritionist at our next appointment wasn’t as much about what I was eating, as how I was living.

Clever Advertisement from Liberty Mutual

March 18, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I tend to be quite skeptical of insurance companies these days. (Who isn’t?) This ad caught my eye as I thought it was extremely clever – and with a powerful message. I feel good watching it. Something that triggers good feelings causes action.

Lessons from Hurricane Katrina

September 7, 2005 by Scott "Q" Marcus

This column was not supposed to happen; instead, I was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at a conference in Louisiana this day.

Mother Nature had other ideas delivered as hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane-Katrina-Sign-Aug-28-05With indescribable sorrow and mouth agape at the sight of such awfulness, I cannot pull myself away from the plight of the Gulf Coast. Robotically, I shake my head and repeat numbly, “There but for the grace of God, go I.” It could just as easily have been an earthquake or Tsunami bringing national cameras to scrutinize my family in our most intimate, broken moments struggling to hold together, adrift, frightened, and cold in the worst of all worlds.

Due to the unsympathetic force of nature and the rearrangements being made, I have lost income.

Yet compared to my friend and associate, Myra, my costs pale. Where she lived has no roof and is full of water. In spite of that, she describes herself as “fortunate.” She spent today helping families with less. I am privileged to know her.

So very fortunate am I that I take blessings as common-day events.

When involved in the confines of day-to-day existence, I have been known to whine bitterly about sluggish traffic, jammed faxes, or misplaced keys. Broken shoelaces, missing shirt buttons, or ants on my sink irk me endlessly.

I presume my daily misadventures can indeed be labeled “problems,” and yes, they are frustrating. At the same time, reality is they are so insignificant. Too often, I become too self-centered to remember that. The dropped cellular call or the unexpected invoice becomes the world’s prime catastrophe. I puff up and spout off, grumbling to my friends, who nod in agreement. We are bonded by our miseries. When we rule the world, things will change.

In a world that can shatter instantly, where unfathomable countless thousands lack shelter, shed tears for loved ones, or cannot find food, I bemoan that I have to count fat grams or cut back on dessert. Can I even know how many pray to be in my shoes?

Peace of mind requires that I remind myself that my tribulations and troubles are usually miniscule. Put it in perspective.

Life is rich. Keep it that way; shut the refrigerator door.
