Political Posturing, News Anchors, and Better Communication

December 30, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

So today, I’m watching a news network and the anchor has three panelists. To “balance” it out, there’s a GOP strategist, a Democratic strategist, and a “neutral” analyst. I don’t remember the question that the anchor asked (and it doesn’t really matter) because once the discussion got going, it got animated. There was a lot of energy and of course some disagreement between the GOP and Democrat.

It could have been either one but in this case it was the GOP guy who started “powering” over anything that was said contrary to his position. When the Dem countered, the GOP would cut him off and speak louder. All I could really hear was him; he didn’t call names and he wasn’t condescending, and – to be honest – what I could hear of his arguments even made sense (although I basically disagree with them).

After the discussion ended, I had an image of him talking to his friends who had watched the show and they were probably all saying “Wow! You blew him out of the water” or “You showed him” or “He couldn’t hold a candle to you” or something akin. Congratulations would abound.

That’s when it dawned on me, his intention – as far as I’m concerned – was not to have a discussion but to prove his point.

How Can I Use This to be Happier?

When someone asks me my advice, my first response (after confirming that they really want it) is always: “What’s your intention in what you’re doing?” Almost nothing matters more in one’s actions or communications than understanding the intention. Most people do not take the time to analyze that simple question and they find themselves in trouble.

To Say “I’m Trying…” is Really to Say “I Won’t…”

December 19, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I am trying to lose a few pounds (again).

I’d put odds on the fact that I’m not the only person in our sleepy burg with such a stated goal. Others are trying things too: stop smoking, be more active, spend more time with their families. As a whole, we TRY many things. The more important question is, “Are we DOING them?”

I wish I could remember which wise sage pointed out “trying” is “saying ‘no’ with grace.”

A friend lost into your past surprises you by reappearing while you are squeezing cantaloupes at the grocery store. Pre-ordained ceremonial niceties commence, “How are your kids? What’s your husband doing these days? Are you still working at the same place?” It’s a pleasurable oasis of exchange with someone who used to be close. Yet, after the first few paragraphs, what remains to be said? An awkward silence slithers between you until finally you utter, “Let’s get together and catch up. It’s been too long.”

She replies warmly, “I’ll try and call you next week, OK?”

“Sounds great,” you say before exchanging air kisses, and continuing on your mission of securing the finest produce. You know she won’t call. You know you won’t either.

She could have said, “No, I’m too busy,” or “No, I’m not interested.” Rather than such bluntness, she replies with the socially approved, milquetoast, “I’ll try.”

Video: Suburu TV Ad – Baby Driver

Being a Good Dad

A quick post as a reminder about what it’s like to be a parent. I love the emotional content in this ad, as well as the reminder that, although our kids might look like kids to us, they feel like adults to themselves. It’s important to acknowledge that if we want better relationships with them.

We Relate to Feelings, not Words

October 1, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Rahm Emanuel is not known to be a softie. Quite the contrary, he’s known to be a hard charging bully at times.Today, he stepped down from this position as Barack Obama’s White House Chief of Staff to run for mayor for the city of Chicago. I watched President Obama heap praise on his long-time friend and then Emanuel took the platform. Rahm Emanuel farewell to Obama Of course, he thanked the president for the opportunities and he praised Obama’s leadership. However, what got to me was when he began speaking about his family, starting with his parents. The usual, tough-as-nails veneer quickly faded and his inner feelings emerged, surprisingly openly. He choked up and even started to cry.

I’m a political junkie; I breathe the stuff. I’ve followed him since he worked with Bill Clinton and I’ve never been a big fan of Mr. Emanuel. He and I would probably not get along too well. However, in those few moments, I found myself feeling surprisingly close to this man. I even teared up somewhat myself (of course, my wife would say I do that anyway).

It was amazing to me that the decade of mistrust and animosity I have felt towards this man could fade in an instant.

It’s NOT about the words

There’s an important reminder here. If you want to connect with people, if you need support, if you’d like to get more done; be real. Let the emotions out. People don’t relate to our words, they connect with our feelings. Yet, too often, we’re embarrassed or ashamed about how we feel.

I’m a speaker. I believe in the power of words; but the true power of communication comes from the emotions that reside underneath them.

Poorly named websites

February 15, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus

All of these are legitimate companies that didn’t spend quite enough time to consider how their online name might appear! These are not made up. Check them out yourself.

1. ‘Who Represents’ is where you can find the name of the agent that represents any celebrity. Their Web site is: www.whorepresents.com

2. ‘Experts Exchange’ is a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at: www.expertsexchange.com

3. Looking for a great pen? Look no further than ‘Pen Island’. It can be found at: www.penisland.net

4. Need a therapist? Try ‘Therapist Finder’ at: www.therapistfinder.com

5. Then there’s the ‘Italian Power Generator’ company. Check it out at: www.powergenitalia.com

6. ‘IP computer’ software, there’s always: www.ip_anywhere.com

7. And the designers at ‘Speed of Art’ await you at their wacky Web site: www.speedofart.com

Thanks to my friend Roy Block for sending it to me.
