What can Happen in one Moment?

May 21, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Given time and inspiration, what can be accomplished in 100 years?

Just over a century ago, the must-have vehicle was the initial Model T as it rolled forth on rickety spoked wheels for the first time from the Ford assembly line. The traffic signal, invented by Garrett A. Morgan, flashed for the first time 15 years later. (Most likely, although lacking tangible proof, tailgaters, gridlock, and rush hour started when the second automobile hit the streets.)

The radio tuner, allowing listeners to select different stations, transmitted its debut in 1916. Short wave tagged along three years hence. John Logie Baird switched on mechanical televisions, predecessor to modern TVs, in 1925. Frequency modulation (“FM”) first broadcast in 1933 and the earliest color TV flickered to life in 1940. The first cellular phone rang in 1979 (probably in a movie theater).

Medicine marched onward. Sir Frederick Grant Banting invented insulin (1922). Alexander Fleming devised penicillin (1928). Wilson Greatbatch brought life to the internal pacemaker in 1959, followed by Robert Jarvik’s artificial heart in 1978.

Even toys changed. Silly putty bounced and the slinky slinked on to the scene, both in 1943. Mr. Potato Head was appealing in 1952. Cabbage patch kids flew from shelves in 1983.

So much can happen in the passing of a century. Yet, what can one mortal do in only one lifespan?

Look Backwards for Motivation

May 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-markIf you wish to be inspired, it makes more sense to look backwards, rather than forwards.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, the road ahead looks daunting and intimidating; it seems to go on forever.

However, if you change your view and look at how far you’ve come, you’ll notice the changes you’ve already made, inspiring you to stay the course.

Give yourself credit for the road already traveled, take a deep breath, congratulate yourself for your accomplishments, and then – and only then – face forward and take one more step boldly towards your goal.

Identify Your 20%

May 5, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are two laws in the universe: Gravity, and the “80/20 Rule.”

In case you’re not familiar with the 80/20 Rule, it states that “Eighty percent of all results will come from 20% of all the effort.” In other words, if you have ever worked on a committee with 10 people, 80% of the work was done by 2 of the people.

How does this apply to habit change?

Habits are triggered by events, such as we eat (habit) because we’re stressed (event). To change your habits, you need to change how you handle the event. To change how you handle the event, you need to identify your triggers.

Here’s the good news.

The 80/20 rule tells us that we do not need to identify every single triggering event in our lives. If we identify the 20% of triggers that cause us the most trouble, we’ll fix our habit 80% of the time.

Fix your habit 80% of the time and you’re moving forward at incredible speed!

If you’re serious about changing your habits… [Read more…]

Expect Things to NOT go as you Want

April 28, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

woman-not-looking-where-goingIt’s great to make plans; they are necessary to help you get where you want.

Do not, however, make the mistake of expecting that simply because you made a plan, it will go as expected. That’s an exercise in futility.

It’s much smarter to assume that your plan will only go perfectly until you start it. After that, as they say, “Life is what happens while you’re making other plans.”

When things get tough, keep your head down and your eyes on the prize. (OK, that’s a mixed metaphor which technically would only make sense if your goal was to look at your shoes – but you get the point.)
