The 5 Year Rule

September 30, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Calendar-writing-on-self

Before getting upset, ask, “Will anybody really know or care about this five years from now?”

If the answer is “no,” take a deep breath, relax, and let it go.

Most things will be “no.”

If the answer is “yes,” you have a crisis on your hands and getting upset about it will not help you deal with it. Instead, come up with a rational plan to move forward.

This does not mean deny your feelings, rather deal with them when the crisis is over.

Every Monday, a new motivational memo is posted by Scott “Q” Marcus, Motivational Weight Loss Speaker and Life Balance and Productivity Expert. That’ll Teach ‘em!

September 11, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There are three kinds of people in the world; those that are good at math and those that aren’t.

nerd-doing-math

OK, old joke, but still funny.

How about this one?

There are two kinds of people in the world, those that eat when stressed, and those who don’t understand the situation well enough to be stressed. (If you’ve never had to lose weight, you won’t find that as humorous as those who do; sorry.)

I have a friend who’s beanpole skinny. “How do you stay thin?” I asked.

Replied this wisp of a man, “When I’m stressed, I lose my appetite.” Say what? Not eat when frazzled; on how many levels is that wrong?

So, I’m supposed to speak in another state in a few weeks. The agreement was executed early this year. Last month the phone rings.

“Hi Scott. We’re having budget issues, which requires the governor to now review every personal services contract to see if we’re going to go ahead with the agreement.”

“OK,” I reply, “This affects me how?”

“You have one of those types of agreements. But,” my contact quickly appends, “don’t worry, (famous last words) they’ve given a green light to the conference so we should have everything worked out in a couple days. After all, we can’t have a convention without speakers, can we?”

Would you be as surprised as I was if I tell you they can? Yep, true.

Knocking off Those Things Called “Problems”

January 29, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Most of us who are leading worry-free happy lives have our own problems which we haven’t considered discussing with anyone. Instead, most people choose to pretend as if nothing is wrong and learn to live with the problems. Though problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – Problem, I don’t want you in my life.

Of course, we have been fighting troubles ever since we were born. Issues with friends, parents, girl friends, boyfriends, spouses, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves that outline our feelings such as low self-esteem, low confidence, loss of faith, inferiority complex, nervousness – these keep adding to our already existing problems.

Bad news is that problems come in different shapes and sizes and colors and feelings and situations. Good news is that ALL problems can be solved.

Now breathe a sigh of relief and read on to know how to solve your problems.

Talk, it really helps

What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no amount of talking is going to help. Know this – when you talk about your problem to a person, don’t expect that person to understand. Instead, when you talk about it, you are releasing the negative energies that’s been mounting within you. Talking helps you move on and let go.

Write your problems

Having a journal or a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. When you write down your problems, you are venting out all the frustration and tension from your system. You can try flushing away the paper in which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself flushing away the problems from your life.

Relax and think

More often than not, when problems mount, we forget thinking. Instead, we choose to panic and stay glum. Teach yourself to relax in situations that demand your focused attention. When you relax, the answers become more clear and obvious.

Don’t lose faith and hope

No matter what you lose in life; do not lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, family, friends and career, you should still have faith. You say that sounds crazy. How can a person still have faith after losing everything? That’s the magical part. With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose.

Your problems are not the worst

No matter what problem you get in life, there are another one million people whose problems are huger than yours. Tell yourself – when they can deal with them, why can’t I? Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed.

Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a solution.

But Today I’ll Smile

October 11, 2012 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

I was stuck inside my house all day Saturday and Sunday because I had the worst migraine ever.

I was irritated that the pain was causing me to stay in my dark bedroom all weekend. Completely overwhelmed, I started to cry which only made the headache worse. I felt like it wasn’t fair because I work hard all week, and like anyone, I want to make the most of my weekends. I wasn’t hungry, I didn’t have the strength to work out, and I couldn’t even stand the mere sound of the TV. I just wanted to feel sorry for myself.  I wanted my boyfriend to feel sorry for me and take care of me. I just wanted to feel better. I just wanted to keep crying.

I went to the doctor last night to figure out why I had such a bad headache, and she just told me I have “the same virus that everyone has right now. Take some Advil Cold & Sinus, buy some nasal spray, and it will go away soon.” Not feeling too satisfied, I did what the doctor told me to, and I left. I was still annoyed.

I woke up today still feeling somewhat off, but something had changed.

Maybe it’s because today is my friend Ashley’s 27th birthday, but she’s celebrating in Heaven instead of here on Earth with all her family and friends.  Maybe that’s what made me realize how selfish I had been for being so consumed with my lack of a fun weekend. I quickly started feeling lucky that my worst problem was a stupid headache. Maybe it’s because I got a text from my sister saying she’d be home on December 18th for Christmas. Maybe it’s because I woke up warm and tangled up in our beautiful bed, the same bed I didn’t want to spend one more minute in over the weekend. That very same bed felt and looked different this morning. For the past few days, it felt like frustration. This morning, it felt reassuring. There’s comfort in knowing that I have a bed to wake up in and go to sleep in tonight. I felt honored to have an angel in Heaven to say Happy Birthday to.  I felt excited that I could start the countdown to when I would see my sister. I felt fortunate that I have a job to go to that provides health insurance which allows me to go to the doctor to find out I have nothing more than some aggravating virus. I felt thankful that I really do have everything I want, and I felt sad for the people who don’t. I felt honestly and truly blessed.

So, yes I cried a lot this weekend, but today, I think I’ll just smile.

Forward or Backwards: A Conversation About Weight Loss

June 27, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

“Dang! I’ve been really careful on my diet and I haven’t lost a pound. I’m ready to give up the whole thing and toss the stupid scale through the window.”

“That’s kind of killing the messenger, isn’t it?”

“You miss the point. I’m eating healthy. I’m working out like a machine – and this is the result I get? Might as well just go back to how I was before.”

“I don’t know if that makes sense.”

“Why not?”

“You’re not losing now — and you’re being careful. If you just throw caution to the wind, won’t it get worse? I mean; I understand how frustrated you are, putting in all that work and having disappointing results; but it seems that’s better than gaining.”

“I’m not saying I’ll go put my weight back on. I’ll just — you know — cruise for a while. Stop trying so hard and stressing about the number, I’ll maintain. Then, when I’m ready, I’ll get back to losing.”

“Can I ask you a personal question?”

“Sure.”

“If you know how to maintain your weight, why do you need to lose 30 pounds?”
