Take Responsibility for Something New

August 18, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Take responsibility for something new today.

proudmanIf there’s something in your life that you do not like, take responsibility for it – even if it feels like it’s out of your control.

Ask yourself, “If I could could control this situation, what might I do differently?”

It’s not a guarantee that you will be able to change it, but abdicating responsibility guarantees that you will change nothing.

Besides, it feels better to try and not succeed than it does to feel like a victim in your own life.

Listen to as Many People as You Can

April 8, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Listen to as many ideas as you can.

Can you hear me?

Even if you don’t use what others say, you won’t have the option if you don’t listen.

I was surprised that one of the best lessons I ever learned was from someone I barely respected.

He was a consultant at a radio station at which I worked in my twenties. I thought he was a buffoon but, because he held control over my position, I was forced to listen to him.

He told me “Great managers don’t always come up with the best ideas, they just recognize them.”

I thought that was brilliant! It turned me around in a minute.

Whether you’re a manager of a business or a family, the advice is powerful.

It’s OK to Change Your Mind

April 1, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It is perfectly acceptable to change your mind.

Making a decision

We have the right to change our minds.

Sometimes, we feel that simply because we agreed to do something – or we decided not to – that we are locked into that position “forever.”

As adults, we can decide later that what we decided previously is no longer appropriate for us.

Having said that, as adults, we have to make sure we tell others who will be affected – and we give them enough advance notice to adjust.

Also, realize that they might disagree with our new decision. If that happens, listen to what they have to say.

They just might be correct.

Affirmation: Changing My Mind

May 19, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

It is a sign of strength to change one’s mind – when done with conscious choice.

We make millions of decisions in our life. Some are long-term; others are less important.

Mistakenly, too often we think that simply because we made up our mind “a while ago,” we have to continue to hold the same opinion.  What we decided to do in the past was based on what we knew and wanted at the time. Times change. So can our decisions. It’s okay to change your mind.

I am in charge of my life.

I can change its direction when I choose to do so.

Take Time to Make Good Decisions

April 11, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

When you don’t know what to do, it’s OK to take some time to think about it.

Most of the pressure we feel to make a decision is usually self-imposed. We are afraid that if we don’t make the decision “right now,” we won’t have the opportunity to do so, or that we’ll look stupid or indecisive by not having an answer immediately.

The truth is that if we make a quick decision under pressure, the odds are that it will not be as good a decision as taking some time to think about. It’s better to make a correct decision in a little while instead of a poor one immediately.

(Of course, if the decision affects someone else, be fair and tell them how much time you need and then don’t make them “chase you” for the answer. Get back to them when you said you would.)
