You Cannot be Happy Until You Let Go

December 30, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

road-sign-with-question-mark

The person in the mirror is not getting any younger.

We see our bodies change and hear ever louder the ticking of the clock.

It can be frightening.

Yet, part of what amplifies the fear and holds us back is attempting to hold on to that which is no longer there.

As another year fades into history, bid farewell to what has passed. Feel the loss if necessary, but say goodbye with dignity and grace. Remember fondly the better memories. Realize all you have done and all you have been through have given you tools you did not have.

Take a deep breath. Smile.

Then, turn and face forward.

Let a new year bring you boldly into your future.

Attitude Calling

December 4, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

At the dawn of my sales career, a co-worker gave me a cassette: Zig Ziglar’s “Secrets of Closing the Sale.”

audio-cassette

Reluctantly plugging it into the tape machine, I expected to eject it (and the ideas) immediately after the slack on the tape was absorbed. Instead, I became a fan of the old-time motivator from Yazoo City who postulated that health, wealth, and happiness are the natural results of treating others well and that attitude is essential in doing so.

Years have passed, and unfortunately so has Mr. Ziglar, but I still remember vividly a scenario he used to illustrate how fluid is our perception. (I’ve altered the concept, but felt it important to give credit to its origin.)

Picture rising on your “average” day, nothing exhilarating or dreadful is on the agenda. As you rub the sleep from your eyes and swing your bare feet from the softness of the bed to the hardness of the floor, using a one-to-ten scale, think about how you’d rate your attitude. Sure, some days barely merit a “one;” others are heavenly, generating a “ten.” But — on the run-of-the-mill everyday — what ranking would you choose? (FYI, based on a long-term survey I conduct, the majority of respondents end up at 7.9.)

Attitude locked in place; you interact in usual fashion with friends, families, and vendors. As the day fades into history, you retire, expecting to rise again tomorrow and repeat the process. Not meaning to cast our existence as mundane; but, it is most of what life is in present-day America.

So, let’s shake it up.

Again, imagine the ordinary morning. However, this dawn you are jolted into consciousness by a ringing telephone. Glancing at the clock and noting the early hour, your first thoughts are concern, “Who is calling this early? What’s wrong?”

Positive Attitude is not Enough

November 4, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

A positive attitude only gets you so far.

climbing-mountain

If you’re not in shape for the climb, you’re still going to die half way up the mountain.

There’s nothing wrong with a positive attitude. It’s never harmful – and many times it’s essential.

However, unless you put it into action, it won’t do a thing. There is no substitute for hard work.

Think positive – and then positively act.

Special thanks to https://www.facebook.com/larrymersereau where I found the inspiration for today’s topic.

Dealing with Complainers

October 16, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus

They are numerous, ever-present, ubiquitous; present at work, parties, and even family gatherings.

complaining-man-ranting If attitude is indeed contagious, they are the Ebola virus of a positive outlook. Bringing their own “gloomy sunshine” wherever they go, they leave behind a trail of mental and emotional destruction wider than a hurricane’s wake. Should we discover the cure to all illnesses tomorrow, they would protest that it put the doctors out of business.

woman-rantingWe can tell they’re nearby, even before they open their mouths. Dour expressions firmly etched into grim-faced expressions and unconstrained bitterness dripping from their souls, they pummel, pound, and persist until they reveal the dark cloud behind any silver lining. Even after short encounters with these denizens of dourness, their dark energy can drain the happiness from even the most upbeat individual. They are Eyore to our Tigger, Ying to our Yang, frowns to our smiles; they are (insert ominous music…) the “bearers of badatude.”

Whether it’s due to the state of the world, the change in seasons, or just bad luck, they do seem to have multiplied lately. (Maybe it’s their mating season?) For whatever the reason, it seems more difficult to avoid them than it used to be.

Ever the helper — and in the interest of public service and a better community attitude — I offer a few suggestions on how to deal with complainers.

Rule One: Understand that when a freight train is roaring down the tracks at you, GET OUT OF THE FREAKIN’ WAY! Do not plant yourself firmly, attempting to block its path, expecting to convince it to take the switch. Instead, realize that batatude folks are better about plowing you over and dragging your formerly upbeat demeanor into a negative mood than you will ever be at changing their direction. They are professionals; having honed the dark art to a fine talent, they inflict bad attitude among even the most optimistic individuals. You — on the other hand — pale in experience when it comes to turning it around. It’s not a fair competition; don’t even try. You will lose. Move elsewhere; if not physically, then certainly to the happy place in your head.

Having not been able to circumnavigate Mister Miserable, the next step is to put it in perspective by employing the “Five Year Rule.”

Combatting Emotional Distress is Not a Challenge Anymore

August 27, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Is it worth being upset?

Emotions are an indispensable part of human life.

However, at times you might find it difficult to deal with the ones that pull your energies down. The problem begins when you carry the emotional distress for long and it begins to influence negatively your personal and professional life.

Depressive mood, irritability, self-criticism and disappointment are some of the common symptoms signaling that you are undergoing a problem. They may be attributed to an emotionally hard-hitting experience of your life.

You need to stop pitying yourself and feeling helpless for not being able to control your emotions. Hiding away or avoiding your pain is never the solution for it can put you on a self-destructive path by resorting to wrong methods such as use of drugs or alcohol. Clear your mind and think of the healthy ways to deal with the situation. [Read more…]
