Believe in the Best

September 23, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Believe that everything happens for the best.

You have two choices in what you believe about what happens:

  1. You can believe that everything happens by chance; randomly. We are just leaves in the wind.
  2. You can believe that everything happens for a reason.

There is no right nor wrong choice.

However, if you choose to believe that everything happens for a reason; you might as well believe it happens for a good one.

How to be Happier – Quickly

July 8, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Where you are in life is basically the result of the behaviors and choices you have chosen to do and take so far.

Those choices are based in large part on how you viewed the world at the time, which is what we call “attitude.”

Your attitude is “the complex interaction between feelings and beliefs that affect how you view the world – and therefore how you react to it.”  Therefore, your attitude is made up out of feelings and your beliefs, which stem from your thoughts.

Attitude Cycle

So, to make your life happier, take a moment to make your next thought happier.

Repeat whenever possible.

Our Feelings are Our Own

June 3, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Woman screaming at phone.

Nobody makes anybody feel anything.

We learn to react to events by feeling certain ways. We can learn to react differently if we want to.

It won’t always be easy but it’s definitely  worth it.

More Than What We See

April 17, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Recently, I received an invitation to attend a rehearsal of an upcoming performance of Skin Deep, a Neil-Simon-ish poignant comedy about weight, body image, romance, and relationships.

Although this is not a theater review, I admit that even though the cast was three weeks out from opening night, my wife and I both truly enjoyed it. The play bounces lightly between humorous and tender moments with an unforced ease and the tight cast of four actors performed well with and up against each other. Never did I check my watch – and that’s rare until itself.

However, the reason I was invited was NOT to provide good reviews (um, which I think I just did…) but because the plot, to a large extent, deals with how our inner dialog determines the quality of the lives we lead. Since you’re reading this column, I assume you understand that is one of the pillars about which I write.

Maureen Mulligan, an overweight woman, is afraid of romance because she might get hurt.

Because of her critical self-talk, she masks her pain with humor and conjures up excuses to avoid becoming involved with a sweet, slightly awkward gentleman who sees her for who she is as a complete person, paying little heed to the superficial level of what she weighs.

The playwright, Jon Lonoff, must have been overweight, as he gives eloquent voice to what so many of us with body image “issues” say to ourselves — and then reflects that internal dialog’s outcome in the quality of our lives.

Maureen is prepared to live in unhappy solitude, pacifying the emotional pain with Chinese food.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying — nor is the play — that a woman (nor man) can only be defined by her relationships. However, should we choose to avoid them because we feel unworthy, that’s a pizza with a different topping. [Read more…]

Cherish the Milestones

January 8, 2013 by Featured Author

By Maddy Olson

I don’t know about everyone else, but 2012 has been a pretty rough year.

But here’s the thing: I feel like the higher powers are trying to teach me some lessons. Why? Because I have become complacent with my family…taking them very for granted and allowing life to pass us by. He knows I am full of love for them, but in the routine we get into, I don’t always make special time to build relationships.

My husband and I have a whole clan. I’m serious. I have four sons, he has four sons and a daughter. Since we have been married, we have acquired two daughter-in-laws, a son-in-law, and have a baby girl on the way. Recently, we lost a little grandson. I told you we were an enormous family!

Snap out of the normal goings on of your life and wake up to the vibrancy and love that encompasses you.
