Looking Through Pin Holes

June 28, 2017 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Jimmy was lying on a knoll in the middle of a meadow on a warm spring day staring up at the puffy white clouds as they rolled by, leading him to consider the big questions we all face:

What is the meaning of life? Why do we exist? Is there intelligence beyond the stars? What is the nature of God?

“God? Are you really there?” Jimmy said out loud.

To his astonishment a voice came from the clouds. “Yes, Jimmy? What can I do for you?”

Startled by the response but unwilling to let such an opportunity pass, Jimmy asked, “God. You exist in all places and across time. What is a million years like to you?”

Knowing that Jimmy could not understand the concept of infinity, God responded in a manner to which Jimmy could relate. “A million years to me, Jimmy, is like a minute to you.”

“Oh,” said Jimmy, considering the thought for a moment. “Well, then, what’s a million dollars like to you?”

God replied again, “A million dollars to me, Jimmy, is like a penny.”

“Wow!” remarked Jimmy, getting an idea. “God, you’re so generous, can I have one of your pennies?”

God answered, “Sure thing, Jimmy! Just give me a minute.”

The concepts of infinite and forever are simply too immense for us to wrap our brains around — at any age.

As a child, first beginning to grasp the expansiveness of the Universe, the image that came to my young mind was somewhere “out there” would be a boarded-up wall, much like one would see on an abandoned building, which marked the end of Space. That lead to the next question, “What’s on the other side?” All I could imaging was another wall, and another, and another…

Decades have passed and the perception of infinite is still beyond my comprehension.

The Most Powerful Force

March 25, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Know there is a greater force than your own.

Ask for guidance when you need it.

endless possibilities

It matters not what you might call that force.

Some call it, “God” or “Spirit,” or “Universe.” Some have no name for it at all. However, we are all connected to an energy more powerful than anything we can possibly imagine.

When you doubt your abilities or when you are unsure what to do, let it speak to you.

Then, be silent long enough to hear the answer.

It’s a travesty that anyone has to live in slums like these.

Reaching Down the Well

September 9, 2011 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

By L.C. Duperouzel

If someone you loved had fallen down a well what would you do to rescue them? Would you call for help and wait with them, offering words of encouragement until the emergency services arrived, or would you take more of a participatory role in the rescue, and go and find a rope that you would then use to hoist them out of the hole? Regardless of which one of these approaches you favoured, one thing that you would probably not do is jump into the well to be with them. Taking this step you would not be able to help them much. Being just as stuck as they are, you would also require the assistance of skilled helpers before you and your loved one could be returned safely to the surface.

Adding to your loved one’s problem, you have not really done the right thing by them even though your intentions may have been good. Better would they have been served if you remained in a position of strength at the top of the well. Using this strength for their benefit, they can rise up and beyond the circumstances that previously immobilized and isolated them. Grabbing their hand and pulling them to freedom they reap the rewards of empathy which promise much more than any act of sympathy can hope to deliver.

Although they are often confused for each other, empathy and sympathy are not the same thing. While the latter focuses on the negative emotions that one is experiencing, the former focuses on understanding the person and taking the journey with them. Sometimes this is extraordinarily difficult because we may not have experienced what another has. Limited in this respect, we are however capable of opening our hearts to enter the inner world of another. Doing this in the spirit of unconditional love, acceptance and understanding, we can lend others our strength, faith and resilience, and help them to overcome in moments of weakness or pain.
