Here we go again

August 4, 2021 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

This column will not be like most of my others.

I consider this space to be a respite from the negativity that seems to crash as a tsunami over us without end. To that point, I’m working on acceptance and surrender; and to my credit, I think I’m doing well at it. It’s the bedrock of my spiritual principles and beliefs. I really do (mostly) believe that all is unfolding as it needs to and the Universe is conspiring for our greatest good.

However, just like you I’m a real person, and I imagine just like you, I’m having a hard time processing what’s happening to us yet again. I’m really ornery about what I think is a preventable fourth (or is it the fifth) wave of the pandemic.

I held faith that when 2020 came to its close, for so many reasons, life would improve. I don’t think any of us felt we’d hold hands and sing Kumbaya while we shared a Coke and taught the world to sing, but there was a bright star rising in the dark sky and, especially as the vaccine made itself known, there was a collective deep breath; a sigh of relief.

Oh well. Here we are, into another surge which is already worse than last summer as well as having the added insult of being preventable if not for people being selfish. (Yes, I get it; some people cannot get a shot but that’s a small percentage of the unvaccinated. Most are either misinformed, confused, or – for whatever reason – consider the vaccine a political statement.)  What makes it more frustrating than last year is that in 2020, COVID was still novel and we didn’t know what we were doing; the science was unfolding and we didn’t have a vaccine. Its spread was unavoidable.

Now, 18 months later, we know what to do. We have tools. We could stop this damn thing in its tracks – if it wasn’t for the lies, conspiracy theories, misinformation, and too many folks concerned only about “What’s in it for ME?”

I got my vaccine as soon as I could. Virtually everybody I know did the same. Yes, we did it for our own protection, but there was also a sense of community spirit, patriotism, and a realization that we have to all work together for the greater good to overcome a common enemy. It felt hopeful. I was proud.

Yet, as they say, “all good things must come to an end” and now we watch as people needlessly die or have their lives ripped apart because they refused to do the right thing. [Read more…]

Best Health & Fitness Apps for College Students

August 23, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Beyond just academic demands, managing life’s basics can be tough while in college. One of the things college students tend to let slide while is their health and fitness. From eating on the go to late night study sessions that stir up cravings, the college lifestyle can have a detrimental effect on weight and fitness. Fortunately, there are some great apps available on smartphones to make maintaining health and fitness in college easier than ever.

FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT

by mobileXware

Works with: iPhone iOS, BlackBerry

Calisthenics — they’re those basic exercises that can be done just about anywhere without equipment. The FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT app attempts to make a game of staying in shape by presenting 50 different screens (which it calls cards) of people doing classic, tried and true exercises. Beneath each drawing is written instructions for performing the exercise safely and correctly. Cards are color-coded according to middle, upper, lower and total body exercises. Cards may also be drawn by name from a list, from a chosen category or shuffled to allow the app to randomly bring up the next exercise.

Gym Technik

by Gym Technik Ltd.

Works with: BlackBerry

Whether you’re just beginning a fitness regimen or are a seasoned pro, the Gym Technik app can help with planning your workouts as well as keeping track of them. The app is free, which college students love, and it is easy to set up. Initial setup does require a computer, but after that students can adjust their workouts using their smartphones. After you create your user name, you’ll be guided to set up workouts based on specific body parts like arms, shoulders, back, abs and legs. You’ll also be able to set up cardio sessions and custom workouts. The program gives you a choice of a large number of different exercises for each workout, plus instructions for correct execution. This app is easy to use and informative.

Weight Tracker

by EzMobiGo

Works with: BlackBerry

This app is easy to use and can be an important ally in the “battle of the bulge.” Simply enter your weight daily. You can maintain your weight or set a target weight and date you’d like to reach the goal. The app will then suggest daily caloric intake and calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) to give you your ideal weight for your height. Knowing your suggested daily caloric intake will make it easier to manage what you eat and when it’s time to workout to bring that number back down.

Ascendo Fitness Calculators

by Ascendo Inc.

Works with: BlackBerry

This calculator provides easy and fast calculations for maintaining your health and well-being. Simply enter your height, weight, gender and age and the app does the rest. You’ll be provided with your ideal weight range, BMI, body fat percentage, Basal Metabolism Rate, maximum heart rate and calories required to reduce, maintain or increase your weight.

Does Spirituality Affect Your Body?

April 11, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

“Your body is; what your soul believes.”

relax meditation attitude calm

It’s all within you. You are the master reining over your body and everything your body experiences. Your ‘spirit’ is the key to creating a balance in your body and your life.

You would not consider spiritualism playing a role in your health?

It goes without saying that you do so much to keep the body fit and fine. You see a doctor on regular intervals, practice medication, therapies and what not. There is nothing wrong in it. But, while doing all this, you forget about your spiritual and mental well being. You don’t think about doing something for your spirits, your emotional health, and spiritual emptiness. Being spiritually fit could help you unravel many health complications including weight issues.
