Best Health & Fitness Apps for College Students

August 23, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Beyond just academic demands, managing life’s basics can be tough while in college. One of the things college students tend to let slide while is their health and fitness. From eating on the go to late night study sessions that stir up cravings, the college lifestyle can have a detrimental effect on weight and fitness. Fortunately, there are some great apps available on smartphones to make maintaining health and fitness in college easier than ever.

FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT

by mobileXware

Works with: iPhone iOS, BlackBerry

Calisthenics — they’re those basic exercises that can be done just about anywhere without equipment. The FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT app attempts to make a game of staying in shape by presenting 50 different screens (which it calls cards) of people doing classic, tried and true exercises. Beneath each drawing is written instructions for performing the exercise safely and correctly. Cards are color-coded according to middle, upper, lower and total body exercises. Cards may also be drawn by name from a list, from a chosen category or shuffled to allow the app to randomly bring up the next exercise.

Gym Technik

by Gym Technik Ltd.

Works with: BlackBerry

Whether you’re just beginning a fitness regimen or are a seasoned pro, the Gym Technik app can help with planning your workouts as well as keeping track of them. The app is free, which college students love, and it is easy to set up. Initial setup does require a computer, but after that students can adjust their workouts using their smartphones. After you create your user name, you’ll be guided to set up workouts based on specific body parts like arms, shoulders, back, abs and legs. You’ll also be able to set up cardio sessions and custom workouts. The program gives you a choice of a large number of different exercises for each workout, plus instructions for correct execution. This app is easy to use and informative.

Weight Tracker

by EzMobiGo

Works with: BlackBerry

This app is easy to use and can be an important ally in the “battle of the bulge.” Simply enter your weight daily. You can maintain your weight or set a target weight and date you’d like to reach the goal. The app will then suggest daily caloric intake and calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) to give you your ideal weight for your height. Knowing your suggested daily caloric intake will make it easier to manage what you eat and when it’s time to workout to bring that number back down.

Ascendo Fitness Calculators

by Ascendo Inc.

Works with: BlackBerry

This calculator provides easy and fast calculations for maintaining your health and well-being. Simply enter your height, weight, gender and age and the app does the rest. You’ll be provided with your ideal weight range, BMI, body fat percentage, Basal Metabolism Rate, maximum heart rate and calories required to reduce, maintain or increase your weight.

Does Spirituality Affect Your Body?

April 11, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

“Your body is; what your soul believes.”

relax meditation attitude calm

It’s all within you. You are the master reining over your body and everything your body experiences. Your ‘spirit’ is the key to creating a balance in your body and your life.

You would not consider spiritualism playing a role in your health?

It goes without saying that you do so much to keep the body fit and fine. You see a doctor on regular intervals, practice medication, therapies and what not. There is nothing wrong in it. But, while doing all this, you forget about your spiritual and mental well being. You don’t think about doing something for your spirits, your emotional health, and spiritual emptiness. Being spiritually fit could help you unravel many health complications including weight issues.

3 Habits Of Healthy People

February 26, 2013 by MikeTremba Leave a Comment

happy-smiling-sunshine

Has being healthy become synonymous with being unhappy?

Who knows.

What I do know is that there’s no reason working toward physical health should have the nasty side effect of emotional displeasure.

When I first started out on a path toward physical fitness, I made a lot of sacrifices. Some of my favorite things to eat—like fast food, fatty, sugary pastries and expensive, thousand-calorie coffee drinks—and favorite things to do—like sit on the couch all afternoon flipping channels, or sleeping until noon—became relics of my past.

I’ll admit, at first I was pretty miserable. Even after I started seeing results in my physical health and appearance, I couldn’t help but reminisce for the days when I could eat what I wanted, do what I pleased (or just do nothing, since I’m being honest) and sleep as late as I’d like.

But through it all, I somehow snapped out of it. I found ways to turn my healthy life into a happy one, and I want to share my top tips for being happy and healthy.

Before I do, though, it’s important to understand what “being happy” really means.

Happiness is a simple concept that’s difficult to achieve.

My journey from the sofa to the gym

December 28, 2012 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Exercise was not something I enjoyed.

Instead of standing up to file papers, I’d scoot over to the file cabinet in my rolling office chair. After work, I flopped on my sofa where I sat contentedly until bedtime. I was living a sedentary lifestyle to the max and loving every minute of it.

As Newton’s Law of Motion explains, a body at rest tends to stay at rest. Even though my office building had a gym – and I had a free membership – I just kept finding reasons to not work out: I was too busy to work out on my lunch break; too tired to work out early in the morning; too stressed out at the end of the day to stick around. Then my boss started a four-week fitness challenge. He offered cash prizes to the team with the most exercise hours logged. The coworkers in my department insisted on participating, and they really wanted me to join in. And, well, I can’t pass up an opportunity to win cash.

I didn’t look forward to working out, especially at work. All I could envision was getting sweaty in the middle of the day or looking foolish in front of my coworkers. When I walked into the employee fitness center, though, I couldn’t believe how clean and fresh it smelled, and how welcoming everyone was. I decided I’d try to keep an open mind, although I wasn’t optimistic that I could stick with any exercise program.

The challenge begins

On the first day of the challenge, we met in the gym during our lunch break. Thankfully, we started out easy. I warmed up with five minutes on the treadmill before hitting the elliptical for 15 minutes. My legs were killing me, but I didn’t want to let my team down.

Showering after working out is important to me, and I thought we wouldn’t have time to shower before returning to work. I was wrong. With the quick workout, I had plenty of time to shower. I even had time to eat the salad I had packed for lunch!

Every day, we kept up the same routine. After a week of regular workouts, I noticed I didn’t feel as sore afterwards. Each week, I felt my body progressively growing stronger as I tried out different machines. I actually started looking forward to our daily workouts.

Not so bad, after all

A few weeks into the fitness challenge, I noticed I felt a lot less stressed out. I was sleeping better, waking up refreshed in the morning and looking forward to work. I stopped making excuses for why I couldn’t work out, because I actually wanted to go to the gym! And I started rewarding myself when I achieved a goal, which helped me stay motivated.

Because I felt so much better physically and emotionally, I made working out a priority, even after the fitness challenge ended. And just to make sure I don’t fall back into my old bad habits, I bought a few pieces of exercise equipment so I can work out, even when I don’t really feel like leaving the house.

I can’t believe how important daily workouts have become to my life.

Just making myself show up that first day of the fitness challenge was the hardest part. After that, working out became a habit.

It’s easier than you think to get off the sofa and into the gym, and the physical and psychological benefits are amazing. Take that first step; you’ll be glad you did.

5 Ways to Stay Fit at a Desk Job

October 9, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

by guest author Kyra Kuik

There was a time, not so very long ago, when human life involved a lot of movement.

With most people doing hard labor in the factories, fields and home, only the upper middle class and above knew much about the sedentary lifestyle. Sadly, as these sorts of jobs have spread across all echelons of society, calories have become more and more condensed into cheap (and delicious) products, packing a one-two punch for our guts and our health. It takes a lot of creativity to stay fit at a desk job, where it’s easier to reach for that slice of cake in the break-room than it is to jog across town to the grocery store for a nice rewarding pack of carrots. Here are a few unexpected ways to sneak that healthy lifestyle in.

5. Get the Most Out of Your Commute

If you can’t get a good workout in either before or after work (and even if you can), try turning that commute into an opportunity for exercise. Run, walk, bike, flap your arms like a bird, whatever; even taking public transport to work will require more movement, as you’ll have to walk between stations and your destinations. This can also be a good way to sneak in time for stimulating podcasts and audiobooks, which can get you into a contemplative or creative mood for the workday, or help you let down after a long one.

4. Sneak in Movement

Despite how it may seem, there are opportunities for movement throughout the workday. Start by getting up to stretch every 30 – 45 minutes, increasing blood flowing through those legs. Drink a lot of water, too, and you’ll have a regular excuse to get moving. Try visiting a colleague’s desk across the office rather than firing off an email, and host a good old fashioned West Wing-style walking meeting once in awhile.

3. Schedule in Time for Lunch

For workhorses, it’s tempting to work through lunch and sneak in a few extra tasks. But the human body and mind have limited productivity, and you’ll find you’ll actually get a lot more done if you take the time to relax and let your mind refresh itself. When I recommend scheduling in time for lunch, I mean actually blocking it off on your calendar like it’s as important as a meeting…because it is. If you take the time to fully enjoy your meal, both your mind and body will take note of what you’re doing, keeping you better satiated for longer. If eating isn’t as important to you, take this time to sneak in a workout at the gym around the corner.

2. Snack…Strategically

Snacking’s bad rap is largely undeserved. Sure, if you throw back a salty, fatty packet of chips three times a day, your body isn’t going to like you. But healthy snacking can actually be your key to staving off hunger-induced binges, keeping energy levels constant, and losing or maintaining weight. For the best results, keep those portions small and try to snack every several hours or so. Go forhealthy snacks that provide nutrients and vitamins along with calories, like fruit, nuts, or whole grains that won’t spike your insulin levels.

1. Get Your Whole Office In On It

If you’ve got friends at the office with fitness goals of their own, why not make them your support network? They’re right there, and you’ll be a lot more likely to head to the gym after work if you know you’ve got a nearby friend in on it. If you’re up for some lobbying, ask your boss about implementing a workplace wellness program. This can be anything from gym memberships to developing incentives and initiatives for taking time out of the work day for working out, guilt-free. Working out gets a whole lot easier if you’re not having to sneak it in, and a company-wide preventative health program can actually lower insurance costs if they offer wellness programs.

Staying fit at a desk job is possible, just as long as you get your supportive network in place and your creativity hat on. So snack well, get moving, and work better while feeling better, too.
