Giving Thanks in Tough Times

November 18, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

giving thanks in tough times“May you live in fascinating times” is an old curse; the logic being if one chronicles history, “fascinating times” were jam-packed with upheaval. Turbulent, troublesome, frightening, epoch-making periods; anyone experiencing them would be upset, frightened, and anxious.

I point this out because, with the way the world is, one might make a case that we are currently experiencing “fascinating times,” and that future historians will find the initial piece of the 21st century to be chock-full of tumult, worthy of study for generations yet to come. For them, that may be well and good, yet for us in the present, I don’t think I stand alone when I pray we figure out soon how to get along a little better.

Giving thanks in such chaotic times is not simple. It feels difficult and trivial to find positives when all around seems urgent. However, to do so, requires a refocus on what one has, rather than a sadness of the way it is not. Saying “Thank you,” lightens the heart, and loosens life’s burdens — if only for a moment, making living worthwhile. Now, more than ever, it is essential to express gratitude for what one has. We are still blessed in many ways.

I can be thankful to sit at a table with family and friends, sharing food, conversation, and stories. We will laugh at where we have been, even if we disagree about where we are headed. We are not a perfect family unit; but we are what we are. I give thanks, and send a prayer to those less well off.

I am grateful to live where I do. Sure, I complain about excess rain and a hidden sun. I lament the dreary fog in the morning, and the wind in the afternoon. Yet, on the grand perspective, this patch of Mother Earth is no less than stunning. Endless forests of trees on majestic mountains caress the heavens; rushing, raging, rivers cut through strong stone canyons in their never ending race to become part of a breathtaking vista of world’s greatest ocean. I reside in a postcard photograph; is that cool or what?

How to Attend a Holiday Party and not Gorge

November 17, 2011 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Many people aren’t sad to see swimsuit season go.

I’d be lying if I didn’t find some pleasure in slipping on a sweatshirt after months of worrying about my arms, stomach, etc. Summer can certainly make us unnecessarily body-conscious. Unfortunately, winter can make us too lax and be even less healthy. As animals, we have the instinct to eat more when the weather gets cold. But gorging on calorie-dense holiday food can kill any beach body aspirations before they can even start. Simply put, if you want to be fit come springtime then it’s pivotal to not lose it now. You don’t want to spend all of January on a treadmill because of what you ate in November and December.

Enjoying the holidays is important. You should certainly go out, eat, drink and be merry. But there are some clever ways to navigate a party without adding too much cargo. Follow these tips to successfully attend a holiday party and not gorge.

Come Full

If you only follow one of these tips — let it be this one. Eat before you come to a party, directly before you come. At home you can make yourself a nice, healthy dinner or snack that is much better for you to fill up on. If you go to a party hungry then it doesn’t matter what they are serving — you’ll have to eat it. Often, holiday dinner parties have a few hours of hors d’oeuvres before the meal comes. If you cruise into the fray fresh off a healthy snack you won’t need the bacon-wrapped, chocolate-drizzled, peppermint-dipped finger foods to tide you to dinner. It’s fine if you want to sample one or two on your own accord. But not needing to eat these fat landmines will help you to not blow your calorie count before dinner even starts. [Read more…]

How to Decide When You’re Ready for Marriage

September 1, 2011 by Featured Author

Exchanging rings with my fiancé was one of the happiest moments of my life.

I showed off my new bauble to family and friends, which often brought up their own engagement stories. Before long, marital advice started pouring in and not all of it put me at ease. The unsolicited commentary made me realize that I needed to evaluate if I was ready for such a big step.

Be prepared

Due to personnel changes in her company, my best friend got transferred to a satellite office across the country for a year-long assignment – two months after she got married. Though she and her husband made it work, my friend was quick to tell me how lonely she’d been and hinted that the same thing could happen to me. Wondering if my soon-to-be marriage could survive a similar strain, my fiancé and I looked at our work schedules over the next several months. Though it’s impossible to be prepared for everything, we were able to talk about upcoming events we knew about.  At least now we knew when we’d be apart for training or conferences. As a precaution, I started paying attention to the cost of plane tickets and we each set aside a little extra money each paycheck to specifically cover the cost of travel. In the event of a transfer, we wouldn’t have to panic that we couldn’t see each other due to lack of funds. [Read more…]

February Resolutions: Making Commitments near the Holiday Dedicated to Committments

February 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Resolutions expiredSix weeks into the year: So, how are those New Year’s resolutions workin’ for ya?

If they’re now broken shards lying along the highway shoulder several miles in the rear view mirror, fret not, you stand not alone. According to surveys, as many as 80 percent of people give up their vast and glorious seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time plans by the tail end of January; more alarming is as many as 90 percent are never brought to fruition. What might the foremost reasons for not accomplishing them be? About 40 percent of respondents say they didn’t have enough time (read that “not a high enough priority”) and about one-third say they weren’t even committed to doing them in first place. Basically, they set them to get someone off their back. Yep, nothing says “motivation to change” like a heaping, steaming pile of guilt.

Personally, I think the “New Year’s Resolution” is a manufactured event; akin to holidays we didn’t know existed until we went into the greeting card shop. We respond to public pressure, and since “everyone’s doing it,” we don’t want to pay the social price for not going along; hence we make promises we never intend to keep.

Breaking Down the Wall: Resolutions that Work

December 21, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There was a cosmic event this week. For the first time in about 400 years, there was a full lunar eclipse on the Winter Solstice. If you were crazy enough (like me), you went outside around midnight and stared up at the moon, which was glowing with a faint reddish tint. (What was really a cosmic event was that it was clear enough on the Northcoast to actually see the moon!)

At precisely 12:01AM January 2, there will be another cosmic event; although this one happens annually. Should you step outside and listen, you will hear a giant clunking sound rumbling across this wide land as the consciousness of the population shifts from “how much can I indulge” to “how can I undo what I’ve done to myself for the last two months?”

With that in the forefront, you are about to be inundated with experts telling you how to stick to your resolutions. The television will become awash in advertisements for gym equipment. Late night infomercials will blare (falsely): “LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES.” The back page of this newspaper might even be hosting a full-page banner advertisement with “SECRETS THE WEIGHT LOSS INDUSTRY DOESN’T WANT YOU TO KNOW.” At the risk of biting the hand that feeds me (albeit low fat and high fiber), do not buy into gimmicks.
