Unstuck! Bust Your Rut And Experience Immediate Results

April 6, 2012 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

IN A RUT?

Hit a dry spell? Down on your luck? It’s time you get unstuck!

We all find ourselves in the doldrums from time to time. Sales slump? Lacking motivation? Feeling under appreciated? Enough with the pity-party. Let’s bust your rut!

Remedial Rut-Busting

Whether you’re in an interview slump or a sales slump, here are five basics for busting your rut:

  1. Exercise! You’d be surprised how quickly your reality changes when you change your body chemistry. And that’s what exercise does. Be creative about they type of exercise you engage in. Sure laps on tracks and in pools qualify…as do the stairs in your office. But why not make it more fun? Create your own par course. Design your own mini-triathlon when you pick three favorite modes of exercise. Learn a new sport this year to exercise your body.  Exercise can include activities as diverse as soul line dancing, Brazilian caparei or Bikram yoga.
  2. Change your menu. Review your meal menus and make some healthy substitutions. Start with a breakfast that includes protein, fruits and yes — even vegetables. For lunch and dinner limit red meat, and avoid processed meat. Hydrate yourself throughout the day: aim for 6-8 glasses of water a day. Enjoy dinner before 7:00pm, to allow your body to digest and metabolize food fully before you hit the La-Z-Boy or go to bed. If you still crave alcohol, I recommend Loft Liqueur, an organic liqueur that’s healthy and mixes well with other beverages.
  3. Alter your routine. Change your rote patterns and processes. Alter your timetable, change your mealtimes, commute route, etc. You can even alter your seat at your meal table to change your perspective and experience. The variation will refresh you and add more vitality to your daily experience.
  4. Costume Change. Review and upgrade your wardrobe. Are you wearing the same ensembles, same shoes and same colors (hopefully not on the same days!)? Change your wardrobe, enjoy a new hair style or even consider a new fragrance.
  5. Seek out new perspectives. Conferring with others can give you new perspectives on old problems. Whether you seek the counsel of a loved one, member of the clergy, your mentor or a subject matter expert, discussions with others will offer you fresh ideas and help you bust your rut. Dig out of your rut through dialog. [Read more…]

Excellent or Perfect?

March 14, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

excellent perfectDid you know there is an International Association of Print House Craftsmen (which has several women members)? In the day of $99 ink jets and 24-hour print shops, these folks still “bleed ink.” What they construct with printing presses and paper is art – pure and simple.

If you didn’t know about the IAPHC, don’t feel bad. I didn’t either. One of the perks of my occupation is that I get to meet an expansive array of people from a gamut of occupations; some of which I had no idea even existed.

Take the Appraisal Institute. Never having the experience of buying nor sell multi-million dollar office complexes, I never realized that a spot-on, no variation, exact appraisal on the value of such properties — and hence the interest on the loan to purchase them — can cost one hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Decimal points really do matter. The folks of AI are dedicated to that.

Speaking of decimal points, one of the more mesmerizing people I have had the pleasure of meeting is Paul Kingsman, 1988 Olympic Medal Winner for swimming. That award would not have been his had he been five one-hundredths of a second slower. To understand what a short period of time is that, blinking your eye takes about ten times longer than the difference between Paul’s race time and the person who did not win.

Paul hails from New Zealand and now lives in Northern California. As a speaker and coach, he helps others become “distraction proof;” staying focused on what matters so they can achieve outstanding results, in any manner in which that applies.

I interviewed Paul, and although I expected good stuff, I was blown away by what I picked up. We discussed how some things can be simple but not easy. He also pointed out that mistaking “notoriety” for “substance,” especially in this media-consumed culture, often distracts us.

However, as a “recovering perfectionist,” what most resonated was “excellence versus perfection.”

In my interpretation, attaining excellence lets us evolve to new levels. Chasing perfection however, leads us to a frustrated place of stagnation.

You’re Finished! Congratulations.

What have you finished today?

success attitude productivityWhat will you finish this week? This month? This year?

What are you waiting for?

Look around your office. How many projects are on your desk at present? Which ones have taken up permanent occupancy? I consider my desk to be a high rent district. Squatters aren’t welcome. If it stays, it pays.

After coaching from colleague John Tenza I now awake each morning and ask myself: “What am I going to finish today?”

There’s great satisfaction in completing projects, of shipping orders, of finishing manuscripts and closing deals. Conversely there’s negative energy that surrounds projects with no end in sight, ones that just seem to hang on. Liberate yourself from these energy drainers. Commit to complete!

Just as the best time to make a sales call is right after you’ve just made a sale, so too will you feel fantastic about existing projects when you complete one of them today.

Become a Master of Time and Space

According to Tenza, a multidimensional sales trainer, “clutter is a killer. When you put things in their rightful place, toss or give away items, you clear your mind as well as your desk and office.” The key is to get into action. You must decide to do it!

Completions Not Just for Quarterbacks and Receivers

Strive for completions. Coach Tenza knows: “completions give you freedom from that gnawing stress that something needs to be done. Each time you complete an existing project you create new space and new energy for yourself.” John and I concur: your brain and body will thank you or the successes you will realize through completions.

On Becoming A Terminator

Here are some tips to complete more projects.

Benchmarking is Better Than a Resolution and Gets Better Results, Too!

January 14, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Guest Writer: Terri Langhans, CSP

Let’s put this behind us.

Benchmarks are better than resolutions and get better results!

Just days after New Year’s, my daughter and I were talking about making and breaking resolutions. She said hers would be easy to keep. She wanted to cook-in more. Kelsey is in her last semester of graduate school and races between school, internship, work and the gym, eating or munching on the run, or standing at the kitchen counter in her apartment.

I took a deep breath, pondering whether I should just say, “That’s a good one, sweetie,” wearing my Mommy Hat, or tell her what I really thought, wearing my Business Hat.

I managed both. “That’s a good one, sweetie. You’re such a good cook, and you’ll probably save money, too.” Pause. “And, you know what I tell people in my audiences–to put a number on it and create a benchmark. Otherwise it’s not going to happen.”

“It’s cooking, Mom, not accounting,” she sighed. “But what’s a benchmark, again?”

I told her this, essentially.

Fancy definition: it’s a number that measures an activity or result. Real world example: whether you want to cook-in, play tennis, exercise, read, write, walk, run, dance, speak, consult, sell or save more, put a number on it. How many times a MONTH will you make it happen? 1? 4? 8? 16? 20? 30?

Don’t say 10. I mean, you could say you’re going to do something 10 times a month, but it gives me a brain cramp. Yoga 10 times a month? Is that 2 times one week, 3 times the next week, then 2 and 3 again? Make the math easily divisible by 4, as in weeks in a month. Dial it down to 8 or crank it up to 12.

Forget the annual goal.
