Advice to Husbands and Other Significant Others

July 31, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

People contact me about my column.

accountability, ask for helpMany want to share their thoughts or feelings about what I have written. Most times it’s by email, once in awhile by telephone, and periodically in person.

Some folks seem drawn to anyone in the media as moths go to light. This is flattering but can be, at times, well, just plain weird. I’ve been approached about government meat conspiracies, high fructose corn syrup alternative energy systems, even a faster-than-light engine (no, I don’t know how it was tied to my column). If cornered publicly with such theories, I momentarily feign attention, smile awkwardly, mumble an apologetic excuse about “a guy I’m supposed to meet,” and carefully; very, very slowly; back away.

There are those who offer to me the secret “they” don’t want “us” to know about weight loss — for a price of course. I am cynical about “secrets they don’t want us know.” For one, who are “they?” Secondly, why would they deem you to be the ultimate messenger of such vital intelligence? Moreover, are you putting us in harm’s way by passing it along? I would feel miserable knowing that — although I now lose weight quicker — it was at the cost of your life. Actually, I’d feel so darn guilty; I’d probably eat too much, gain back my weight and make your magnanimous (albeit mercenary) gesture to have been in vain.

What affects me most are those seeking counsel.

I’m not a therapist; heck, I’m not even sure I could be “Dear Abby.” But if my words touch someone so deeply that they seek me out for guidance, I’ll do my best.

Help is Available Whenever You Need It

February 25, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

There is help available whenever you need it.

Reaching out to help

Part of the human condition is to at times, feel overwhelmed or insufficient. (If you don’t, you aren’t seeing the full picture.)

When that happens, we need to reach out and get the help and support we need. Whether we do that via prayer or meditation, by joining a support or business group, or by calling a friend; it doesn’t matter. Just do it.

Know there are greater forces than your own and you are not alone.

Help is everywhere – if you look for it.

Ask for guidance.

Then, be silent long enough to hear the answer.

Hopeful Image from Cairo

February 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

At times, it can be painful to watch what’s unfolding in Egypt. However, something that actually made me feel feel good just came across my desk. It’s a photo of who we can be when our better angels are upon us.

What you’re looking at are Christians forming a protective barrier around the Muslim protesters in Cairo so they can take time for their prayers without being attacked by the street thugs that surround the square.

We hear so much how religion can separate and divide. In this instance, it’s a true manifestation of it doing good. I feel better just looking at it.

To see the whole story, follow this link. There is also a video about the story below.

Getting Support: If You Could Do It Alone, It Would Have Already Been Done

December 22, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus

I just finished meeting with my fellow Humboldt County speakers. We’re not a large group; maybe about 10 of us but we all use speaking and training as part of our income; some more than others. We meet at my house and today there were five of us.

Some people think that they can do it “alone.” I imagine they can. My question is “Why?” We are communal creatures. We build cities and societies because we like (and need) to be with others. Not to mention, that the collective mind can usually come up with more ideas than a solitary mind. The ideas might not be the best but with the power of a group, one can see what works, what would not, and make modifications as necessary.

Without a mere handful of people today, I received:

  • Support
  • Fresh Ideas
  • Camaraderie
  • A break from being behind my desk

As a therapist once said to me, “Even powerful people have needs.” It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help nor to be in a group. It actually makes things easier and better.
