Crossing the Line

October 23, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

man-crossing-finish-line

Sometimes, change is obvious:

“You got a new job; good for you! How’s it going?”

“It’s been one month since my last cigarette.”

In those instances, there is a clear “before” and an equally apparent “after.” Last week, he worked for Black Industries; today he’s employed by White Productions. One month ago, she inhaled tobacco several times a day; today she’s smoke-free.

In each of those circumstances, there is a measurable difference; a line has been crossed. It is beyond argument whether or not a transformation has taken place. It has. Period. End of story. They were “there,” now they’re “here.”

However, not all change is so easy to discern.

  • A husband and wife argue almost every day.
In order to change this painful dynamic, they agree to listen better to each other and respond with compassion rather than defensiveness. Although they have not had a disagreement in over a week, today was a rough day and they really “got into it.” What say you — progress or failure?
  • The state of society can be depressing — and contagious.
After waking up day after day under a dour cloud, she decides she cannot do anything about “them” and instead will work on improving her own attitude. Like water off a duck’s back, she lets stresses roll away and is definitely more upbeat — for a few days. Unfortunately, after hearing of an extremely dysfunctional political interchange, she finds her positive outlook beginning to slide. Is she moving forward or backward?
  • You decide to get in better shape.
Setting up a plan that includes twenty minutes of walking every morning, drinking less wine, and going to bed by eleven; you do remarkably well. That is, until you leave town for a family reunion. After sharing stores until three AM over a few bottles of Pinot Noir; you, exhausted the next morning, decide to skip your morning stroll. Are you changing your habits or not?

There are no right nor wrong answers; it’s all how it’s measured.

The “cat’scade” effect

It’s difficult to describe a room’s layout without showing an image — so if you’re really, really into following this column (which describes how the furniture in our living room is placed), you might want to draw a big “L” on a piece of paper. Then again, you probably aren’t that compulsive.

Anyway, a chocolate brown three-person couch comprises the vertical leg of the “L”. Perpendicular to it, forming the horizontal leg of the “L” is a recliner, with both facing the entertainment center, which would be by the top of the “L.”

Stick with me. It’ll all come together soon.

On either end of the couch is an end table, usually covered with the common odds and ends that collect over the day. You know, wallets, reading glasses, books, maybe a coffee cup or two.

The room has a picture window, which would be “below “the bottom of the “L” and behind the recliner. In front of said window, and behind the recliner, is a coffee table. That might seem a poor placement — unless cats reside in your house as they do at ours. Therefore, utilization of the table has been ceded to our two ginger felines who sit there, staring out at the street.

Okay, the stage is set. Here we go.

My wife and I sit on the couch to watch television.

I’m sure most couples — for that matter, most families — always sit in the same place. In our case, I without fail place myself at the “top of the L” while she sits on the other end of the couch. Motor, our younger cat, perches on the coffee table. Mini-Schnauzer Jack rests between the two of us on the couch.

Then there’s Tiger; our older cat, Alpha of the four-legged members of the family.

Is Your Attitude Showing?

August 12, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Your attitude shows – even if you think it’s hidden.

I'm in a bad mood, steer clear!

Don’t deny it; own up to it.

Others are already aware of it – even if you never say anything.

And don’t feel bad if it’s not “happy-clappy” all the time. After all, we all have our down days. After all, someone with a “positive attitude” is simply someone whose attitude is positive more times than it’s not.

Check your attitude regularly. If it’s not serving you, do a reset.

Remember, as difficult as it might be to adjust it, it’s YOUR attitude and you can let it control you – or you can control it.

Five words to change your life

August 7, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

book-with-words

Small words carry powerful impact.

We do not live in isolation, always interacting with and relying on others.

To make those relationships healthier, a sage counselor advised me that one must know when — and how — to use four simple words:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Ouch
  • Next

Accepting gifts, compliments, and assistance with grace — and reciprocating such actions — requires liberal use of the word, “Yes.” Since no two people run parallel all the time, it’s essential to speak up in order to prevent resentment, boundary violation, and be true to our morals. We therefore understand the appropriate, but not excessive, application of, “No.” Despite good intent, others are only human and will push too far, inflicting pain. In such circumstances, we utter, “Ouch.” Finally, when nothing more can be done; the relationship is tattered and torn; the dialog consisting only of heated exchanges of “No” and “Ouch,” it’s time to move on: “Next.”

The concept seemed so simplistic that at first I ignored it.

Yet, over time, I realized its power. Simple can be extremely effective.

Part of its clout is that although this system works brilliantly with people-relationships, it is as efficient in relationship with one’s own habits. Upon analyzing any behavior, question one is, “Is this behavior serving me well?” If  “Yes,” soldier on. If “No”, more analysis is in order. Does the behavior merely need to be tweaked to alleviate the pain (“Ouch”) or is it time to bid it farewell (“Next”)? [Read more…]

The Ripple Effect

July 17, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

question-mark-on-water

The summer I graduated high school was out-of-my-head sensational.

I was thin for first time in my life. Beyond that, I was leaving Grant High in the top ten percent of my class heading to UCLA to study cytology. (Want a great nerdy pick up line? How about, “Hey babe, wanna see my endoplasmic reticulum?”) Eighteen-year-olds could vote and I was politically active, spending days with other “activists” registering voters.

However, the most exhilarating times were Los Angeles evenings with Suzanne, my first girlfriend. Our premier date was Magic Mountain amusement park.

Life simply could not be better.
