Top Diets for the Year

December 19, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus

It’s the most wonderful time of the year; ‘tis is the time for end-of-year lists.

Soon we shall (whether we want to or not) know the Top Songs/Movies/Books/News Stories of the Year. TV hosts will interview the “Most Influential Celebrities.” In the past, publications have gone so far as to post a compilation of lists ranging from “Top Happiest Endings of the Decade” to “Worst Predictions” (which includes “A particle accelerator will end the world”). Therefore, in honor of the list spirit, I shall now bound confidently on to the bandwagon and provide — in no particular order — a compilation of some the most bizarre diets upon which I have the misfortune to stumble. (Yes, they are all real.)

Let us commence with the COOKIE DIET.

One eats one meal per day that must consist of six ounces of protein, as well as at least six of a unique type of cookie each day, for a grand total of 800 calories; about one-third the required intake to maintain a healthful body. Lose your weight and get rid of that pesky hale and hearty glow – all at once! But, mmm-mmm-mmm, sure tastes great! This proves that eating cookies to lose weight makes about as much sense as getting stabbed in the eye to forget about your earache.

After a long week, I plead guilty that a part of me welcomes the SLEEPING BEAUTY DIET.

Give room for others for to do the same with theirs.

We are all going in the same direction. However, we might take different paths.

Especially during this time of year, take time to understand other cultures and beliefs. It will enrich your own life and give you greater understanding.

Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah. Ramadan Mubarak. Happy Kwanzaa. Peace.

In whichever way you celebrate, may you find this season – and all others – to be full of joy and good health.

Less Guilt and Shame

August 20, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

If guilt and shame were motivational, we’d all be more successful.

It’s amazing how quick we are to beat ourselves up and how slow we are to congratulate ourselves. For some reason, we think that if we say enough critical stuff to ourselves, it will motivate us to do better.

If we said out loud to children what we say to ourselves in our heads, we’d all be locked up for child abuse.

Find ways to congratulate yourself for what you do well and constructive ways to improve what you don’t do well. The alternative simply does not work.

Every Monday, a new motivational memo is posted. Subscribers to ThisTimeIMeanIt.com’s coaching service get this – and many more benefits – sent to them directly. If you’d like to know more, follow this link.

Very Clever Advertisements Regarding Self Improvement

August 16, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I was in the media for decades.

That probably explains why I am fascinated by good advertisements and clever marketing. I found these on-line. They all deal with self-improvement so I decided they fit well on this site. Tell me what you think about them and if you can find any more, I’d love to know about them.

[Galleries 5 not found]

By the way, you can see each ad full size by clicking on the “fullscreen” button on the bottom right of the box above. You can find out a little more about each image by clicking the “I” on the top.  You move forward and backwards through the five images by clicking on the left or right side of the image.

Is “Combo Pilling” for Weight Loss a Good Idea?

March 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

While watching the news this morning, I was alerted to the practice of “combo-pilling,” taking supposedly unrelated medications together to produce more powerful results toward a desired outcome. Combo-pilling diet drugs went mainstream in the 1980s, with the pairing of phentermine and fenfluramine (later known as “fen-phen”). This pairing, as well as a commercial related version, was heralded as the first effective weight loss drug treatment. Later, when it was discovered that the commercial drug was associated with potentially fatal pulmonary hypertension and heart-valve problems, it was withdrawn from the market and the manufacturer was sued to the tune of more than ten billion dollars.

Combo-pilling remains, in part because single diet drugs have not yielded the results many seek. After sibutramine (Meridia) was removed from market late last year, the only FDA-approved drug for treating obesity for more than a few weeks is orlistat. However, if dieters eat fat-heavy meals, the results are some less-than-pleasant side effects (oily stains on one’s underwear, being one).

So combo-pilling continues.

Of late, the blend of Topomax, an anticonvulsant approved for the treatment of epilepsy and migraines; and phentermine, the above referenced appetite suppressant, are making their way into the collective dieters’ consciousness. It appears that Topomax effectively “shuts off” the desire to eat. When combined with phentermine, the results can be downright staggering. I monitored some on-line discussion groups and found it not uncommon for participants to claim weight losses of four or five pounds a week for extended periods. (A healthy sustainable weight loss is considered to be one to two pounds per week.)
