Getting Your Act Together: Monday Motivational Memo

July 2, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

You will never have your act together but keep working on getting it there.

Enjoy the process as much as possible.

There is no “there” there.

Once we get “there,” we find out that another “there” exists over the next horizon.

No matter how much we grow and change and evolve; thinking we’ll finally “get it,” we find out that there is still more to learn. Growing is life-long.

The best idea is to learn to enjoy the process and stop waiting to be “there” because you never will.

Leaving a Legacy of Pride

May 12, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

My legacy is what I accomplished, not what I didn’t.

We stress over what we have yet to do. Yet, the reality is no one will probably know what we meant to do. We will be judged by what we actually did.

Since that is the case, it’s important to focus on feeling good about what you have done and continuing to do well on what you are doing.

Your legacy is already being made.

Today, I realize how much I have accomplished and I take time to be proud of it.

Intelligence and Emotion are Not Related

April 17, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Self-Acceptance Affirmation

Intelligence and perfection are not related.

When we don’t accomplish our objectives, we beat ourselves up with insults such as “I can’t believe how stupid I am,” as if we are incapable to doing what we need to do and as if insulting ourselves would move us closer to what we want.

Accomplishment has less to do with intelligence than it has to do with emotion. You can be the smartest person on the planet – yet if you don’t believe you can accomplish what you want, you won’t. Period. End of story.

Rather than considering yourself stupid or ignorant for not accomplishing everything you want, focus on what you have accomplished as proof that you have the skills you need to continue on your path.

I am wise enough and smart enough to accomplish whatever I want.

The Speed of Progress

April 13, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Self-Acceptance Affirmation

Slower is Faster than Never

At times, we become so frustrated with she “slow” pace of change that we give up altogether, feeling “why even bother?”

In effect, we substitute NO change for SLOW change, the end result is that we will never get there.

Any progress is better than no progress..

I accept the pace of change.

Excellent or Perfect?

March 14, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

excellent perfectDid you know there is an International Association of Print House Craftsmen (which has several women members)? In the day of $99 ink jets and 24-hour print shops, these folks still “bleed ink.” What they construct with printing presses and paper is art – pure and simple.

If you didn’t know about the IAPHC, don’t feel bad. I didn’t either. One of the perks of my occupation is that I get to meet an expansive array of people from a gamut of occupations; some of which I had no idea even existed.

Take the Appraisal Institute. Never having the experience of buying nor sell multi-million dollar office complexes, I never realized that a spot-on, no variation, exact appraisal on the value of such properties — and hence the interest on the loan to purchase them — can cost one hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Decimal points really do matter. The folks of AI are dedicated to that.

Speaking of decimal points, one of the more mesmerizing people I have had the pleasure of meeting is Paul Kingsman, 1988 Olympic Medal Winner for swimming. That award would not have been his had he been five one-hundredths of a second slower. To understand what a short period of time is that, blinking your eye takes about ten times longer than the difference between Paul’s race time and the person who did not win.

Paul hails from New Zealand and now lives in Northern California. As a speaker and coach, he helps others become “distraction proof;” staying focused on what matters so they can achieve outstanding results, in any manner in which that applies.

I interviewed Paul, and although I expected good stuff, I was blown away by what I picked up. We discussed how some things can be simple but not easy. He also pointed out that mistaking “notoriety” for “substance,” especially in this media-consumed culture, often distracts us.

However, as a “recovering perfectionist,” what most resonated was “excellence versus perfection.”

In my interpretation, attaining excellence lets us evolve to new levels. Chasing perfection however, leads us to a frustrated place of stagnation.
