Placing the Control Within

March 19, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Some time ago, I postulated that the locus of control for our lives is internal.

That might sound high fallutin’ and all, but it’s pretty simple; my take was that as long as we put control over what happens to us “out there” rather than squarely within, nothing will ever change. We will remain where we are in our development.

I state that without judgment, just pointing out a fact.

Delicious lasagne

For example, it may be true that Aunt Margaret is pushing the deep-dish lasagna she made “just for you” like a pasta addict enabler. Equally true is she gets offended when you turn it down, and saying “no” to her home cooking causes a family rift. It might also be accurate that your husband is unsupportive when he sits next to you munching obliviously away on your favorite flavor of potato chips, while you’re stuck in a funk with celery sticks and carrots. Yes, you’ve told him a thousand times that you’d like him to not do that, and yes, you’re right, he doesn’t seem to care.

However… (don’t you just hate that word sometimes?) the decision about whether or not to succumb to temptation or pressure – as difficult as it might be – still lies within; nowhere else. In effect, it lives within. As long as we say things like, “She made me…” or “I had no choice…” or “It was too hard…” we are committing to stay put.

I’ve seen Aunt Margaret when she’s ticked off and I don’t blame anyone for avoiding a Hatfield-McCoy blow out. But, whether we’re trying to lose weight, increase our income, or just plain be happier; as long as we allow others to determine our actions, they’re controlling us. It’s understandable that sometimes the “social price” we have to pay to follow our path doesn’t justify the return. Again, I’m not placing value; been there, done that; I’m just analyzing.

So what prompted this rehash of a previous topic?

Becoming a Statistic

February 12, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Worldometers.info is an extremely easy-to-navigate web site.

lots-of-numbers

On one page, one can watch “real time world statistics” on all classes of information. For example, as I write this at 10:12 in the morning 83,036,521,929 emails had already been sent TODAY. (Incidentally, in the time it took me to type that last sentence, the total increased by more than 210 million.)

A smattering of other attention-grabbing statistics:

  • There are 2,908,626,597 internet users in the world (growing rapidly)
  • 288,076 new books have been published so far this year (My future daughter-in-law accounts for one of those!)
  • There have been 1,683,340,798 Google searches so far today (three of which were mine)

I was fascinated to discover that are about 1.5 billion overweight and 529 million obese folks on the planet compared to 894 million undernourished. (it appears if we could move some of our food from the “haves” to the “have nots,” it would benefit all.) Relatedly, obesity has cost the United States economy over 245 million dollars today alone and approximately 86.5 million dollars have been shelled out on weight loss programs in that same period.

If you’re into stats, the site will suck you in like a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

Our planet is crowded – and growing more at a net rate of about 2.2 people per second (4.1 born and 1.9 die). As of February 12, 2014 we share our planet with 7,212,822,888 other individuals. Using those same numbers, approximately 361,000 will inhale their first breath today while sadly,173,500 will take their last.

Not one of those souls is more important than any other.

Abhaya’s family in India will grieve as deeply over her loss as will Monica’s children in California. Having said that, some names reach a stratospheric level of recognition in their time here; one of which was Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a gifted actor by any measure.

Does This Harness Make Me Look Fat?

February 5, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

My friend celebrated his 60th birthday by jumping out of an airplane.

screaming parachutist

(Just to clarify, he was wearing a parachute.) When I asked why, he replied, “It was on my bucket list.”

“Wow!” said I. “I don’t think I’d have the courage to do something like that.
Good for you.”

Understand I am not a very adventurous sort, and furthermore, nothing on my “bucket list” has even a remote possibility that while engaging in the activity, I could end up in pieces small enough to fit in said bucket. After all, the way I look at it is if God wanted us to jump out of a perfectly functioning airplane, he wouldn’t have given them locking doors.

Now — should you be so inclined — before mounting high horse and considering me sans courage, realize I get my jollies as a public speaker. According to common knowledge, more folks are afraid of doing that than dying. Therefore, I safely rationalize that my skydiving sexagenarian buddy would watch me in front of an audience and say,

“Wow! I don’t think I’d have the courage to do something like that. Good for you.”

Check. And mate.

Recently, a speaking engagement had me presenting on a cruise ship.

(I know, it’s a difficult job, but someone had to do it.) If you’ve have not had the opportunity to be on one of these floating towns, understand they are indeed titanic. (Hmmm, poor choice of words; let’s just say they’re huge.) Moreover, our ship, Allure of the Seas, is the largest ever.

Someday, somewhere, somehow…

At this very moment, a frustrated, frightened middle-aged woman is standing on a scale in a state of disbelief.

Depressed Overweight Woman

She hadn’t dare climb upon it for years, afraid of the number she’d see — and terrified of what it would mean. Today however, after finding nothing in the closet that fits, the anxiety of not knowing overrode the faux safety of denial.

Her fears were realized.

As she continues to stare at the number between her toes, confidence is dwindling. Lost, she understands she needs to do something. She’s also not sure she can.

Today, a foreman will unexpectedly be put face-to-face with the unpleasant reality that he isn’t as young as he used to be.

Long ago, feeling uncomfortable in ever-tightening pants, he shifted from a belt to suspenders. After all, he didn’t need to buy larger trousers; this was a temporary situation. As a million times before, he’d drop those “few pounds” as soon as things “settled down.”

Funny thing, that; they didn’t, and his belly now is profound. Having not been witness to his toes in a blue moon, moving has become laborious, bending a chore, and breathing — well, it’s just not as easy as it used to be.

Before today’s calendar changes pages, in the midst of a frustrating conversation with a client, his shortness of breath will ramp up severely; he’ll begin sweating profusely, feel light-headed, and become unmistakably aware of an overwhelming pain in his arms and back.

The day will end not at all the way he planned. [Read more…]

Busted! Hooray!

January 15, 2014 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

writing-care-on-window

My first wife was employed by a non-profit organization that took care of developmentally disabled adults.

Although affiliated with a nationally known organization, her particular office was managed more like a franchise. They got use of the brand but seemed to run independently — and with callous disregard for what was right and appropriate.

She would rant about the conditions in which she served, most notably about the unrealistic budgetary constraints provided to feed the residents. One example that stood out was that she was instructed to feed six residents with one can of tuna.

That was the tip of the iceberg. There were so many that the parent organization forced them to amend their name by adding “…of (our city)” to it. (Why they didn’t just make them drop it altogether I do not know.)

Eventually, after my wife complained loudly and forcefully enough, they took action: firing her.

Anyone who has ever been axed harbors revenge fantasies. Usually however, time paints them over and, despite a residual dislike for ex-employers, we move on, hoping for karma to do its thing.

Most of the time, we never know. Once in awhile, we get to see it in action.

Months after her dismissal, the national TV news magazine, 20/20, aired a report on fraud in non-profits, which, joy of joys, was focused where she formerly worked. We watched with smug satisfaction as Geraldo Rivera, microphone in hand, chased her ex-boss across the parking lot, trying to get him to “answer a few questions.”

Like I said, once in awhile, justice prevails.
