Want to Feel Better? Take a Walk

January 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I don’t know if this is really a surprise; however, according to a piece on Health24:

People who live in ‘walkable’ communities are more involved in their communities, more trusting and have a higher quality of life. This is according to a new study. (A walkable community means people have an easy stroll to  destinations such as parks and playgrounds, club meetings, and services such as a post office, coffee shops and restaurants.)

(This was  based on a study from the University of New Hampshire.)

They found that walkable communities scored higher on every measure of “social capital.” They also found out that people who

lived there were more likely to report being in good health and were happy more often than those elsewhere. (The study appears online in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life.)

What happens if I don’t live in a “Walkable Community?”

That’s a great question. Well, you can make it one – at least for a short period. Find ten minutes to take a walk. Do it briskly. (It’s impossible to feel bad when walking briskly – really!) Breathe deep. Enjoy the moment.

You might also enjoy reading a piece I wrote when I had trouble taking a walk while in Texas. It’s humorous – but mostly true.

Getting Support: If You Could Do It Alone, It Would Have Already Been Done

December 22, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus

I just finished meeting with my fellow Humboldt County speakers. We’re not a large group; maybe about 10 of us but we all use speaking and training as part of our income; some more than others. We meet at my house and today there were five of us.

Some people think that they can do it “alone.” I imagine they can. My question is “Why?” We are communal creatures. We build cities and societies because we like (and need) to be with others. Not to mention, that the collective mind can usually come up with more ideas than a solitary mind. The ideas might not be the best but with the power of a group, one can see what works, what would not, and make modifications as necessary.

Without a mere handful of people today, I received:

  • Support
  • Fresh Ideas
  • Camaraderie
  • A break from being behind my desk

As a therapist once said to me, “Even powerful people have needs.” It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help nor to be in a group. It actually makes things easier and better.

A Few Moments For Oneself

November 14, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Sometimes, it feels like we are only accomplishing something when we are “doing” something. This morning, I am in Columbus, OH. its a slightly blustery fall morning. I have 30 minutes before I begin my presentation. I’m all set, nothing else to “do.” yet I have this overwhelming urge to make myself busy.

Instead I’m forcing myself to sit and think and watch the leaves blow by the hotel window (although I’m obviously not even doing that because I’m writing this). I have to remind myself that not only is it OK to simply “be,” but at times, it’s even essential.

One of these days

October 1, 2010 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

One of these days, I’m going to get back on track with my diet.

Really. I’ll burst out of bed inspired, invigorated, and enthused. I’ll clear the kitchen, throw out the junk food, pull out my motivational books, and start weighing, measuring, and monitoring anything that crosses my lips. No crumb of cuisine will be too trivial to escape my scrutiny. Yep, that’s the way you lose weight you know. One of these days, boy am I going to get my eating act together! I’m just so busy right now.

Someday soon I’ve got to start exercising. I could wake up earlier, strap on some tunes, and stroll around the block. It’s just so warm in bed, and I’ve been waiting for the rain to stop; my raincoat is so old, I’d look silly walking around town in it. I’m looking forward to a patch of blue sky so I can get back out there.

Just as soon as I can get around to it, I need to start a journal. I’ve been organizing my thoughts — even thinking about jotting down a few notes. I considered using a yellow-lined pad, but I really want to keep my thoughts and feelings for years. Recording something so important on any old bland notebook would be tacky, so I’m toying with buying a deluxe, leather-bound journal — maybe even an expensive pen. When I can put away a few dollars, I’m so there.

In a little while, I think I’ll even go again to my meetings. It’s just, well, you know how it is: holidays, travel, celebrations… who can control themselves with goodies everywhere? A slip-up here, some sloppiness there — boom — eight pounds! I almost went back last week, except it’s so embarrassing to keep putting on the same pounds — so I’ll knock them off first, and then head back. In a few weeks, it’ll be a better time anyway.

One of these days real soon, I’ll get it all together. I’ve been planning it a long time; I just want to make sure I do it right, no mess-ups allowed. So I’m waiting until life settles down before I get started. Let me tell you though, when the time is perfect, there’s no stopping me.

I can feel it coming, one of these days, real soon, right about the corner…
