Ways to Give Thanks to be Happier

November 12, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus

The more grateful we are, the happier we are.

In a crazy, busy, over-overwhelming world, it’s hard to remember to be grateful. But it definitely helps.

Here are some options of what you can do to share the gratitude:

  • Thank a co-worker for what he or she did for you
  • Thank a clerk for his or her help
  • Leave a note for your letter carrier thanking him for his hard work
  • Put a dollar in jar for charity
  • Tell a family member how happy you are to have her in your life
  • Pray, meditate, breathe deeply
  • Send a card
  • Smile when you can – and catch yourself doing so
  • Leave a post below

With Thanksgiving approaching, it seems like a good time to get “in practice.” Please share what you did.

Keep it in Perspective

October 29, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Keep things in perspective.

We’ve had a rough couple of days at our house. It seems like the fates are conspiring to cost us money.

  • We’ve had to hire someone to do some painting on the exterior of our house where the wood was starting to show through.
  • We have some windows where the framing is leaking and causing some rot. That’ll set up back some coin.
  • Our bathroom is leaking. We heed a new shower head, some plumbing repairs, and  – because of the leak – we’ll probably need some floor repairs
  •  As November approaches, we’re finally ready to put on the heater. Guess what? It’s not working! I’m sure that will cost us something.
  • On top of all that, a few family members have hit some rough patches. When you’re family (in whatever definition you choose that to be), you step in. So we have.

I was getting a little nervous about all the out-pouring of money.

And then, I realized that at least i don’t have a hurricane barreling down on my neighborhood and I remembered after Hurricane Katrina, we lost contact with a friend who was in its path. We were scared that something had happened to her. Several days later, she contacted us. She was okay. However, the roof of her house was gone. She said she was really blessed.

“Blessed,” I asked? “You just lost your house.”

“But I’m still here to tell you. And everyone is fine. I’m really lucky.”

It was a great lesson.

Sometimes, we’re better off than we realize – especially when we have others who watch over us.

(To our friends in the path of Hurricane Sandy – we’re thinking about you, sending our best wishes, and praying for you. Be well. Take care of yourselves.)

Dealing with Bad Attitude

October 22, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

People with “Badittude” are better about ruining your attitude than you are about correcting theirs.

Some people just want to be “cranky.” Try as you might, there’s not a thing you can do to change them. They are professionals at what they do – and you are an amateur at getting them to stop doing it.

When you see someone coming at you with “badittude,” send love and compassion their way, but step out of the way.

It does neither of you any good to both be victims of a poor attitude.

Choosing Skills or Attitude

October 15, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

A positive attitude with poor skills is more likely to help your success than great skills with a poor attitude.

But, work on your skills anyway.

Knowing how to do something well is important. But doing it with a bad attitude diminishes your achievements.

Take pride in what you do. Encourage others. Help them in their journey. (But don’t forget to keep on working on your own skills too.) [Read more…]

Beat the Bullies at Their Own Game

October 12, 2012 by Featured Author

This week, I was interested to see bullying hit the spotlight in a very real sense at the beginning of National Bullying Awareness Month. News anchor Jennifer Livingston from La Crosse, Wisconsin proved that bullying isn’t something that happens only to kids. After receiving an email from a viewer telling her she was a horrible example to young people because of her weight, Livingston responded on air. She let the viewer know that he doesn’t actually know her, or her struggles, and that it isn’t acceptable to bully her.

Livingston pointed out that bullying is a major issue, especially for young people, and that many of them don’t know better than to make fun of people. She also mentions that kids who bully often learn it from their parents, who need to lead with a positive example instead. This October, which is National Bullying Awareness Month, all of us should take the time to consider how our attitudes affect our kids and how we can teach them.

Supporting Kids who are Bullied

I recently had a firsthand experience supporting a bullied child. My younger cousin, who is in middle school, was being made fun of by her peers because she hadn’t used a fancy new tablet before and didn’t know how to navigate it. She only has experience on an older desktop computer, and the kids at school were calling her dumb and making fun of her socioeconomic situation. She came home in tears, and her mom asked me to come hang out with her.

I told her about when I was in school and felt left out because all of my friends were chatting online and my family didn’t even have a computer in the house so I couldn’t join in. Knowing that she wasn’t the only one who was bullied helped her feel supported. I also reminded her that she can spend more time with kids who don’t care what kind of technology she uses. You can use similar strategies with your kids, sympathizing with them and helping them remove themselves from negative situations.

Teaching Your Kids to be Respectful to Everyone

On the flip side, you should also be conscious of whether your child may be a bully. If you find out that your child is making fun of other kids or behaving aggressively toward them, have a stern talk with your child to let him or her know that the behavior is not acceptable. If your child has been bullied in the past, remind him of how hurt he felt when that happened.

One area of particular concern with bullying is online bullying. This was exemplified in the story of the news anchor, who received the hurtful words as an email. As your kids develop an online presence, whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter or just through emails, teach them that the words they say matter. In particular, remind them to not make fun of others, even if they don’t think the kids will see what they’re saying.

Bullying is a huge issue, particularly in school-aged children, and it’s not one you should ignore. Teach your kids to be kind to others, even when they look or act different. Model the behavior yourself so they can learn from you. And when they aren’t bullied, don’t ignore it. This can develop into a serious issue, and it’s your job to support your kids and equip them with strategies to cope and remove themselves from situations in which they are bullied.
