Imagine “As If…”

January 26, 2015 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Imagine your plans turning out exactly as if it was supposed to.

magic_wand

We all have our moments where we imagine how things can go wrong. Sure, “stuff happens,” but not as often as we think it does, and when it does, it’s usually not as bad as we thought it could be.

Picture everything working out the way you want it to.

Imagine how you’ll feel when you get what you worked for. Think about what the success will feel like. Fill yourself with the emotions and beliefs of accomplishment.

Even if it doesn’t turn out exactly the way you thought it would, you’ll still enjoy the ride much more.

(Besides, can it hurt to imagine the best?)

Video: Use Gratitude to Build a Better Life

February 25, 2014 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Thank you signIf you want to build a better life, being grateful for the one you already have is a great place to start.

That’s the message Dr. Robert Emmons delivered recently through his work with the University of California-Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. Emmons, an expert in the field of positive psychology, stressed grateful people empower themselves to construct ever more positive and happy lives.

26 “Starting Over” Tips From People Who Have Done It

August 2, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

By Mary Lee Gannon

This week I had the pleasure of profiling 11 successful individuals who have had to start their lives over.

Their stories vary from being laid off to dodging bombs in Bosnia to losing their mother to murder to divorce to the death of a husband. All of these champions overcame immense challenges to meet with professional and personal success. What I have done below is tried to capture for you some common themes in things they shared with me so that you may learn from others who have truly succeeded at their own personal turnaround.

1. Stopped being a victim.

2. Get support, create self-awareness and figure out what is your fear and what are the obstacles that are getting in the way.

3. Set goals daily.

4. Be willing to do whatever it takes.

5. Stay positive. Surround yourself with only positive people.

6. Write out 10 things every day for which you are grateful.

7. Your feelings need to be validated so you can let them go. Covering them up with “positive thinking” is a band-aid at best. Do something frivolous for yourself. Life has just dealt you a blow, and you must find a way to tell yourself that you are on your side. It need not cost a fortune…..perhaps it’s a massage, a special brew of coffee, or flowers or a facial or a new CD or a manicure. But you definitely want to send a loving message of support to your psyche. [Read more…]

Video: The Darker Side of Positive Thinking

July 12, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Can a positive attitude actually be a problem?

I had not previously heard of Barbara Ehrenreich, but she’s listed as “acclaimed journalist, author and political activist.” In this video, Smile or Die, from RSA, she explores what is termed as the “darker side of positive thinking.”

Whereby I agree that just thinking something can be naive and even dangerous (per her war example), I think she is simplifying the process. It’s not about just thinking and expecting a result. It is also about getting support, guidance, and direction from other people. Of course, you have to take some action too. Having said all that, my good friend Henry Mulak posted this on my Facebook wall and I think it is very cool. Not only does the animation intrigue me but she makes some great points.
