Tithonus, a mortal, was so loved by Eos that she convinced Zeus to grant him immortality and bestow upon him eternal life.

Yet she forgot to request everlasting youth so as he aged, he withered, begging for death. Eos, out of pity, changed him into a Cicada; where to this day we hear him bab-ble.

Long life without good health is prison.

I have been more focused on the health care debate than many, in part because my wife and I fall in the five percent that received a cancellation notice from our insurance company. Informed that our plan would cease to exist, we could do nothing and the Insurance Company Deities would transfer us to a comparable high-deductible, basic coverage, catastrophic coverage plan with no effort.

Before one considers this an altruistic, benevolent, considerate deed, one must also know that our rate would skyrocket from $502 a month to almost $1,000. Being of a “certain age” where health care coverage is essential (and now required) and being of a “certain in-come” where spending more on said policy than on our mortgage is unacceptable, I researched.

My observations:

  • We are one of those families who was not able to keep our health insurance — even if we liked it. (Being cynical by nature, that prompts for me a bigger question: Does anyone really “like” their health insurance plan or do they consider it a necessary evil like a root canal or paying taxes? I think the latter.)
  • The Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) is not a government “take over” of health care; it reforms how insurance companies provide it and how we purchase it.
  • The health care site in California (www.coveredca.com) is ridiculously easy to use.
  • And here’s the best part! Through that site, our rate for a comparable policy plummets by $500. Yep, you read that right; it will cost us less to have catastrophic health care each month than to buy coffee in the hospital cafeteria should one of us be admitted.

I considered long and hard before providing my opinions as I realize that in today’s polarized world, anything associated with anything gets someone’s knickers twisted. Moreso, even reasonable folks can argue as to whether the changes are good or bad (although $500 per month savings is fantastic). I also believe that are better ways to ensure every-one has access to affordable heath care.

Video: Woman Hands out Notes to Obese Trick-or-Treaters

I have mixed feelings about this. A woman in ND is handing out notes to trick-or-treaters she considers to be obese. The notes are presumably taken home to the parents.

Time to Take a Stand for Good Health

October 9, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I hope you’re sitting down when you read this; it’s quite alarming.

Hmmm, actually, I hope you’re not.

Most of us have sedentary lifestyles.

In many cases, rocks move more than us. I say this neither to induce shame nor guilt, but because – well, that’s just the way it is. Unless you’re an athlete or you have a job that’s got you on your feet all day long, a 2008 report showed that the average American spends about 7.7 hours per day plopped on an ever-expanding tushie. An Australian study says, “The average adult spends 50 to 70 percent of their time sitting;” a majority of his or her life.

It’s not difficult to get there. Consider an office job, relaxing in front of the TV, sitting at the dinner table, reading a book, driving to work, watching DVDs, going to the movies, playing video games; the list goes on. I mean, if we used our feet half as much as we used our behinds, we’d have shapely legs and firm butts; which sure as heck wouldn’t be a bad thing.

With the exception of walking my dog, conducting meetings, or going to Zumba, I spend most of my day in front of a computer screen. For goodness sakes, I’m doing it right now writing this piece. You might not be a computer jockey like me but I bet your life is similar.

What’s alarming is that recent research is showing that type of lifestyle can be as unhealthy as smoking.

Want to know the details? (Actually, you don’t; but I’m going to tell you anyway.) [Read more…]

When I’m 64

September 4, 2013 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

June 1, 1967:

Immediately after the school bell blared the end of the day; Richard, Randy, and I, exploded out of the classroom, saddled up our bicycles, shot out of the school parking lot and peddled furiously en masse to Records Ltd, on the corner of Victory and Van Nuys. Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was available! Before they sold out we must each have one!

Oddly, when we got back home, we each went our own way and collectively, yet separately, listened to our own private copy, phoning each other, or yelling to through open windows, to see what the others thought after each song. One would think it would have been more fun and simpler to all gather together, but who understands the mind of adolescents?

“When I’m 64” was no one’s favorite

Sure, it has McCartney’s sweetness to it and the lyrics were easily learned, but age 64 was so long into the future that we related no better to it than we would should it be about space aliens (which being nerdy teenage boys, we would have preferred).

Moreover, we had grandparents that age who were just ancient. My grandma, Zlate, appeared so timeworn that I could not possibly imagine that ever happening to me.

Of course, her time was severe. Emigrating through Ellis Island after escaping the persecution of the Czar, she survived horrific poverty, lost her husband at the age of 29, and raised three daughters solo, managing to support them by starting her own junkyard business.

Grandma was strong and determined; no arguing that. But the decades took a heavy toll. With the skin on her hands cracked; face deeply lined; she literally bent under the weight of her survival; staggering sluggishly rather than walking, always with the assistance of someone’s arm supporting her, her oversized housecoat and apron hung loosely around her large frame. She required rest after moving even the shortest distances.

No, I would never be like that.

Dianna Nyad recently climbed from the sea to the land at Key West after swimming 100 miles from Cuba. This was not her first crack at it; rather it was number five. She first attempted the crossing 35 years ago, in her late twenties.  [Read more…]

Best Health & Fitness Apps for College Students

August 23, 2013 by Featured Author Leave a Comment

Beyond just academic demands, managing life’s basics can be tough while in college. One of the things college students tend to let slide while is their health and fitness. From eating on the go to late night study sessions that stir up cravings, the college lifestyle can have a detrimental effect on weight and fitness. Fortunately, there are some great apps available on smartphones to make maintaining health and fitness in college easier than ever.

FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT

by mobileXware

Works with: iPhone iOS, BlackBerry

Calisthenics — they’re those basic exercises that can be done just about anywhere without equipment. The FitDeck Mobile BODYWEIGHT app attempts to make a game of staying in shape by presenting 50 different screens (which it calls cards) of people doing classic, tried and true exercises. Beneath each drawing is written instructions for performing the exercise safely and correctly. Cards are color-coded according to middle, upper, lower and total body exercises. Cards may also be drawn by name from a list, from a chosen category or shuffled to allow the app to randomly bring up the next exercise.

Gym Technik

by Gym Technik Ltd.

Works with: BlackBerry

Whether you’re just beginning a fitness regimen or are a seasoned pro, the Gym Technik app can help with planning your workouts as well as keeping track of them. The app is free, which college students love, and it is easy to set up. Initial setup does require a computer, but after that students can adjust their workouts using their smartphones. After you create your user name, you’ll be guided to set up workouts based on specific body parts like arms, shoulders, back, abs and legs. You’ll also be able to set up cardio sessions and custom workouts. The program gives you a choice of a large number of different exercises for each workout, plus instructions for correct execution. This app is easy to use and informative.

Weight Tracker

by EzMobiGo

Works with: BlackBerry

This app is easy to use and can be an important ally in the “battle of the bulge.” Simply enter your weight daily. You can maintain your weight or set a target weight and date you’d like to reach the goal. The app will then suggest daily caloric intake and calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) to give you your ideal weight for your height. Knowing your suggested daily caloric intake will make it easier to manage what you eat and when it’s time to workout to bring that number back down.

Ascendo Fitness Calculators

by Ascendo Inc.

Works with: BlackBerry

This calculator provides easy and fast calculations for maintaining your health and well-being. Simply enter your height, weight, gender and age and the app does the rest. You’ll be provided with your ideal weight range, BMI, body fat percentage, Basal Metabolism Rate, maximum heart rate and calories required to reduce, maintain or increase your weight.
