Fry Me a River: Trying to Diet in New Orleans

October 5, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

She had a slightly Cajun accent, “What’ll it be honey?”

Adorned in a blue apron, order pad in hand, poised to take my order, she was patient; but the restaurant was hopping, so I dare not send her away. Everyone knows the prime rule when it comes to waiters: Tell them you need another minute to make up your mind and they disappear for an hour. I had to decide immediately or starve.

The problem was, when one’s traveling in the deep south, as we were, everything — and I do mean EVERYTHING — is fried. Just reading the menu was causing a weight gain.

I stalled, “Take their orders first. I’ll be ready when you get back to me.”

She turned to Rich. “What’ll it be honey?” she repeated.

Rich, familiar with southern food, knew instantly what he wanted. “We’ll start with an appetizer of fried alligator.”

My head snapped, “Fried alligator? Really?” I’m not a fan of alligators, but my raised-in-California-with-lots-of-salads mentality had trouble imagining me devouring something that, not too long ago, would have reversed roles.

Ignoring me, he continued, “Then, a side of fried sardines, oh — and a few fried collard green wontons.” He turned to the two of us, “Sound OK?”

Margie, nodding, chimed in, “What about some hush-puppies?”

“What are hush puppies?” I asked. It was difficult enough imagining fried alligator. To me, hush puppies were soft, comfortable shoes. Although I was confident we wouldn’t be eating suede; after learning of fried sardines and alligator, I had a wee doubt.

“They’re great,” she said. “They’re sweet, doughy, bread balls. You’ll love them.”

“How are they prepared?”

“Fried.”

I could feel cholesterol plugging my arteries even as I sat.

Very Funny Story About Eating Healthy: Bran Flakes

October 4, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

We all need some humor – and if you’ve ever tried to eat in a healthy fashion, you will find this laugh-out-loud funny. I don’t know the author but it was sent to me from a friend in Texas. Enjoy – and pass it along to anyone who’s ever dieted.

BRAN  FLAKES

The couple was 85 years old and had been married for sixty years.  Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife’s insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.

One day, their good health didn’t help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven.

They reached the pearly gates, and St.. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said,

“Welcome to Heaven  This will be your home now.”

The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost.  “Why, nothing,” Peter replied, “Remember, this is your reward in Heaven.”

Funny Image About Forgetfullness

I’d get so much more done if I remembered what I had to do.

I don’t know where this came from – but I think it’s hysterical – and so applicable while being incredibly simple. Enjoy.

Best Wedding Dance Entrance Ever

August 27, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus

Today is Mary Ann and my 11 year anniversary. In honor of that, I wanted something inspirational that was tied to marriage. If you have not seen this video, it’s five minutes of absolute delight. Enjoy.

By the way, according to a post on blog.koldcast.tv entitled The Ten Best Wedding Videos Since the Invention of YouTube

The JK Wedding Entrance Dance is arguably the most popular of all wedding dance videos. The couple married on June 2, 2009 and released the video that July. Within 48 hours, the video was viewed 3.5 million times. To date, it’s been viewed close to 60 million times. That’s like inviting Italy to come see your wedding. The video features the entire wedding party dancing their way to the altar to Chris Brown’s Forever. The couple was invited to talk about the phenomenon on The Today Show and even did an encore there.

By the way, at their site, they are thanking people for the amazing response by donating to the fight against domestic violence. Kudos.

Video: Humorous Baby Advertisement About Attitude

August 22, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

First, I put up lots of kitten videos. Now, I’m putting up videos with babies. I’m being taken over by cuteness.

Well, what the heck, this is still a great ad from Huggies about maintaining a good attitude. (And I love the swagger the “lead” has when he walks.)
