Dear Diet Diary

August 3, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Sunday

My backside looks like cottage cheese during an earthquake. I’ve got to do something about it. So, tomorrow, I’m going on a diet. Here’s to success!

Monday

Okay, I guess I’ll start Tuesday instead. We had some leftover cookies in the house, as well as that birthday cake from last week, and a jar of peanut butter. I knew they were going to be a problem and had to get rid of them. In retrospect, it might have been smarter to throw them away instead of eat them, but what can you do? At least the house is clean of those fattening foods, giving me a running start tomorrow. Here’s to success!

Tuesday

So far, so good! No cravings. No slip-ups. Who would think it would be so easy? We’ll see how it goes after I get out of bed. I think I’m going to make it.

Wednesday

My alarm didn’t go off so I didn’t exercise – but I did try on five pairs of sweat pants to see which looked best. I mean, you can’t exercise in ratty clothes can you? So, I got a great pair and now I’m absolultely, positively, really, really set to start tomorrow. Watch out world, I’m on my way!

By any Other Name…Our Choice of Words Affects Our Success

May 25, 2012 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

Words matter.

What we say to ourselves in our quiet spaces gives birth to actions. Life is the consequences of those events. If we wish to alter the course of our existence, to change its path, or to enjoy more the process, we must begin with the thoughts that steer it.

For example, let us take the overused, beaten down, threadbare expression: “I’m going on a diet.” At the point when the peoples of all nations unite in solidarity and appoint me Head Honcho in charge of Global Linguistics, I shall ban the expression; I find its limited options lead to broken promises, loss of joy, low self esteem, and eventual failure.

In the stark and barren world where one “goes on a diet,” it automatically implies one must — at some time — go off a diet. All is black and white; there is no gray; only “on” or “off,” “good” or “bad,” “following the diet” or “cheating.” The gradations of in-between, which fill most of life, do not exist as, in that thought process, one cannot be “a little off” anymore than one can be “a little pregnant.”

This perfect/awful thinking supposedly drives us to be perfect, which is an impossibility, so we inevitably label ourselves as “failures.” Those of us who are recovering perfectionists know well the mantra of the dieter who has crossed to the dark side: “As long as I blew it, I might as well really blow it! I can start again tomorrow.” (or “Monday,” or “next year”…) Once I have failed, I might as well get all of the “failing” out of my system, cleaning myself so I will be ready for to be perfect next time (ignoring the fact that it too will end up the same way). Are you a Liar? Being Honest With Yourself, Personally & Professionally

September 16, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

By Emanuel Rose

My drivers license said I weighed 190 pounds, even though a few years ago I found myself looking at 226 on the scale I was standing on.  Shocked and surprised as all middle aged men who have been saying to themselves “ I can still move around just fine.”

I resolved to drop that extra weight.

I had lost the weight before, so I started running a few minutes on the treadmill and taking some classes at the closest HealthSPORT.  I dropped 10 pounds that first year and then put all that weight back on and had to start over the next January.

That next year I hired a personal trainer, met with the nutritionist and allowed myself to be “talked” into going on a diet that I followed intermittently.  That got me to 206, but I was stuck, not because I wasn’t getting good direction, but because I hadn’t gotten completely committed to the program.

To get to what my driver’s license said, I had to be committed to the lifestyle change the professionals at HealthSPORT that I hired recommended for me.  In addition to exercise, I needed to eat more protein, minimize carbs and supplement my food with fish oil and specific nutritional supplements.  I got to 190 and I have been there for a few weeks and I have a plan to stay there.
