Fixing Smokey: Who is More Stubborn, Cats or People?

November 9, 2011 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

My wife, Mary Ann, is one of the most nurturing individuals you will ever have the pleasure to meet. She is also a passionate advocate for animals. More specifically, one might refer to her as “one of those cat ladies.” I personally would not do that as the result would be that I would spend my evenings in solitary. (Of course, she would spend the night-time with our cats, proving my point. Yet, I think the irony would be wasted on her.)

The Orange BoysWe had three cats.

Sadly, “K.C.,” the elderly matriarch passed away early this year, leaving the two identical ginger cats, “Tiger” and “Motor.” (Let’s be clear; I did not choose their names, okay?) These “orange boys” are “inside cats,” because our vet said that the best way to ensure your kitties lead a long, healthy, purr-fect life is to not them prowl the streets. As nimble and agile as felines might be, they don’t understand the concept of automobiles.

Within our fenced backyard dwells a third, Birman, cat. She (we think she’s a “she” but we’re not sure) unexpectedly appeared six years ago, and although she has departed for short periods, she always returns. Exhibiting no fear of us, she’s incredibly affectionate, so we think she was abandoned. Due to her silky, strikingly beautiful, long, silver, and black fur, we call her “Smokey.” (I wanted “Velvet” but was over-ruled.)

Since K.C. passed, my wife has wanted to integrate Smokey with the orange boys, especially as the weather turns harsh. Last weekend, she was finally able to convince Smokey to come inside. To help her feel safe (as well as let the other animals acclimate) Smokey stayed in an unused upstairs bedroom, replete with bed, food, water, litter box, and a screened — but slightly open — window, allowing her the ability to survey the neighborhood from on high. After Smokey was given the good-health go-ahead by the vet, we would begin the process of assimilation. [Read more…]

Making A Cat Shelter at Home

January 4, 2009 by Scott "Q" Marcus Leave a Comment

I know it seems apparent but I just had one of those “no duh” moments. It hit me big time that the more interactive you make what you do, the more likely it is that someone will buy it or will use your services. Why aren’t we doing more of this?

Where did this brain drizzle come from?

My wife is a “cat nut”. It’s everything feline and, since I love my wife and want to be with her, I have learned to accommodate. Therefore, we now have three “inside cats” and one “outside cat” (referred to as such because, well, she lives outside).

Smokey the

Smokey, as we’ve grown to call her, is a beautiful Birman cat. We think someone abandoned her because for the last several months she has been living in our backyard so, we’ve started to take care of her by feeding her. She seems to enjoy this because she’s even let me pick her up now and then. However, as for coming into the house: not yet. Between the other three cats and the proliferation of cat hair everywhere, it:

  • a) Does not seem smart for us
  • b) Is not something Smokey seems inclined to do.

However, we’ve already got solutions in place for the mess they make, like the vacuum we found at https://allgreatvacuums.com/best-vacuum-for-pet-hair/ that works brilliantly on cat hair, so one more won’t make a difference, right? Plus, with the cold weather lately, we wanted to figure out something we could do to help her stay warm on these cold nights. We looked online and found (pardon the expression) “cat houses” that we could use but since we didn’t want to spend upwards of a few hundred dollars, we had to find an alternative method.

The one time I didn’t have to worry about cat hair getting everywhere was when one of our cats ended up getting alopecia for whatever reason. If I remember correctly I think this particular cat ended up scratching their fur all off, I think they might have had fleas. Anyway, we were told not to worry too much about it, and we were just given a treatment to help with the fleas. But to help our cat’s fur grow back we looked online at things like “alopecia in cats home remedy” and were pleasantly surprised by the results. Needless to say, their fur grew back and now we have cat hair everywhere (just like normal).

Spay and Stay to the rescue

Through the magic of Google, my wife discovered SpayAndStay.org. Their mission:

“Spay and Stay is made up of a diverse group of people who all agree on one thing – that together we can make a difference in the lives of feral and stray cats in our communities.”
